I am just curious as to if any of my phellow phans have the same problem with their friends/family not "understanding" the importance and value of JB and his ideologies/lifestyle. And if you have a solution to it (other than taking everyone you know to a JB concert when you win the lotto, like I would do!) please share with everyone else. We need as many phans as we can get, because it'll make the world a much more pleasant place to live--make those trips around the sun more bearable with less reliance on boat drinks, if you know what I mean!
No respect for JB! :O

No respect for JB! :O
I've noticed that the pharther and pharther I go into my lifelong phandom, that my friends and family (except my dad) are less and less receptive/understanding of my fixation on Jimmy Buffett. They listen to AC/DC, Marilyn Manson, Lil' Jon, Pearl Jam, Usher, Green Day, and all the other commerical B.S. and think it's all brilliant, classic music--but they think JB's music is empty and pointless. I'd love to explain it to them and prove to them why they're wrong, but I can't for two reasons: 1) you can't force someone to have good sense/taste and 2) I can't put my admiration, respect, and fixation for JB into words because it's just too powerful. So I have to accept that everyone else is just insane!

I agree. I admit that I recommend people like Jack Johnson to my friends, but I never try to proselytize with JB. He makes enough money, and I find that people have preconceived notions about JB. Everyone I have ever spoken to who makes fun of him (or me for running around the country and attending his concerts) knows nothing about him or his music. I can do no better than to quote the man himself:ToplessRideFL wrote:I dont try to convert people.... more tickets for Parrot Heads....

You either get it or you don't.......
I listen to a lot of commercial crap.....like Green Day, Nickelback, Pearl Jam.....I listen to a lot of classic rock......
Buffett will always "have my heart" and is the music of my soul, but I don't expect anyone else to feel the same way.

Not sure when Pearl Jam became "commercial B.S." because if there's any band that's gone against the grain it's been Pearl Jam.
As for folks not liking Jimmy Buffett, like has already been said, not everyone's going to like the same thing you do. For the most part all of my friends and family are fans, just on different levels.

I find even the people that you'd think would get it, don't, and vice versa. I once told my Corona drinking, Caribbean loving baseball coach that I was going to a concert (and miss a couple of games) and his response was along the lines of, "What is he going to play Margaritaville for 2-3 hours?" Yet I often find parrotheads where I least expect them.
I respect other most other musicians because people obviously like them and you're not going to convince the thousands and millions of people who like the Pearl Jams and Coldplays of the world that what they're listening to is crap. Just like no one is going to convince you that Buffett is crap. Is there a genre of music that you don't like? I guess for some, its Jimmy's brand of music. That's life. No one's perfect. Not even Jimmy!
Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I've had similar issues. When I shelled out $200 a seat for Buffett at Wrigley, I was asked, "who would pay so much to see Jimmy Buffett?"
It's better if they don't understand us...just as I can't understand how so many mindless morons are entranced by American Idol and buy Kelly Clarkson cd's, and pay $3 for a coffee.
Wait, I'm guilty of one of those things. ahem.
anyway, we are all a little cheesy in our own ways...some just don't know it!

Okay, I need to clarify--I wrote that after a 30 minute discussion with a classmate in which I was told "Jimmy Buffett is the reason America has gone to hell, and it's people like him that will rot in hell for their lifestyle, just like (and I quote) the gays" and other kinds of ridiculous comments, so if I seemed a little defensive I apologize. This dude was saying all kinds of crazy stuff that got me p*** off (the stuff he said about Jimmy was very minute compared to all the other racist, bigoted things he said), and I just felt like venting my general frustrations through the Jimmy angle. But I digress.
The point I'm trying to make is it's frustrating to really be into something (like Jimmy's music) and constantly have people try to degrade you about it because 1) they don't get it or 2) they only stick to what they know and never try stuff with an open mind. That being said, I can understand why lots of people don't like Jimmy--he's a different breed of cat, no doubt. Hell, even I don't like all his music (just most). I don't think people that don't like Jimmy have explicitly bad taste or anything, but it's just frustrating that there's a stigma surrounding him that shuts people off to him before they even know what he's about. I just wish people were more open-minded about things in general (not just Jimmy, but about life issues in general).
And yeah, I used some bad examples for commercial music (I typed Pearl Jam without paying attention because I was thinking really fast--they are definitely NOT commerical in the sense that I meant it, or any other sense for that matter. For the record I love AC/DC and I think they are classic, but there's lots of people who say they like it and really know nothing about it. When I said "commerical" that's what I meant; when people get "into" a certain type of music or artist because it's popular or well-known, not because they really like it or know anything about it. Green Day, Manson, Usher, and Lil' Jon have some music I like and think is really good music, but again, the music industry commercializes it so much I get sick of hearing it--so it's not that I'm pro-Jimmy anti-everyone else, I just get sick of having "good" music dictated to me through conglomorate radio corporations and such). And I don't think I'm the authority on who should listen to what--I have very eccelctic taste, and I definitely DO NOT think everyone should like she same music I do, and vice versa.
Instead of wanting to tell everyone else why I think they should love JB's music, I'd just like to be able to explain why it means so much to me. But, like has been said in this thread, either you get it or you don't so there's no use trying to explain it.
Again, writing my original post after the conversation I'd just had with my classmate was probably a poor time since my pheathers were still quite riled up. So if anyone's panties got in a wad, I apologize!

However I wouldnt call them parrotheads.Ilph wrote:I don't try to convert people. I play Buffett music alot and if people hear it enough, and it usually does the job all by itself.
