Well, that's a horse of a different color.....that's not about knocking the music, it's about knocking "the people".....I would say use examples of all of the wonderful things PH's have done.....even just on this board......you don't have to look very far to find the incredibly kind, generous and warm hearted things pholks have done.....

The point I'm trying to make is it's frustrating to really be into something (like Jimmy's music) and constantly have people try to degrade you about it because 1) they don't get it or 2) they only stick to what they know and never try stuff with an open mind. That being said, I can understand why lots of people don't like Jimmy--he's a different breed of cat, no doubt. Hell, even I don't like all his music (just most). I don't think people that don't like Jimmy have explicitly bad taste or anything, but it's just frustrating that there's a stigma surrounding him that shuts people off to him before they even know what he's about. I just wish people were more open-minded about things in general (not just Jimmy, but about life issues in general).

And yeah, I used some bad examples for commercial music (I typed Pearl Jam without paying attention because I was thinking really fast--they are definitely NOT commerical in the sense that I meant it, or any other sense for that matter. For the record I love AC/DC and I think they are classic, but there's lots of people who say they like it and really know nothing about it. When I said "commerical" that's what I meant; when people get "into" a certain type of music or artist because it's popular or well-known, not because they really like it or know anything about it. Green Day, Manson, Usher, and Lil' Jon have some music I like and think is really good music, but again, the music industry commercializes it so much I get sick of hearing it--so it's not that I'm pro-Jimmy anti-everyone else, I just get sick of having "good" music dictated to me through conglomorate radio corporations and such). And I don't think I'm the authority on who should listen to what--I have very eccelctic taste, and I definitely DO NOT think everyone should like she same music I do, and vice versa.

Instead of wanting to tell everyone else why I think they should love JB's music, I'd just like to be able to explain why it means so much to me. But, like has been said in this thread, either you get it or you don't so there's no use trying to explain it.

Again, writing my original post after the conversation I'd just had with my classmate was probably a poor time since my pheathers were still quite riled up. So if anyone's panties got in a wad, I apologize!
If your classmate seriously thinks that Jimmy Buffett and gay people are causing America to go to hell, then your classmate needs a full frontal labotamy, not a lesson in music culture. The fact that this guy doesn't like Buffett is the best reason I can think of to like Jimmy. Every single friend of mine who likes Buffett is kind, charitable, and would bend over backwards to help a friend. Do me a favor. Don't talk to this guy about Jimmy Buffett. I don't want him anywhere near a concert that I may be attending. I don't discriminate against gays and I like Jimmy Buffett. Tell your friend I will see him in Hell. I'll be the one in the Hawaiian shirt.

yep same here. I used to always try to slip in a jimmy cd here and there and before you knew it they actually started to like it. However I wouldnt call them parrotheads.
Hell, I don't care if they like him or not, but in my car we're listening to my music. It usually seals the deal down the line.

I can relate. It's not that you're trying to get someone else to scoop up all the tickets... it's that when something is meaningful to you, you'd like to share it with friends because you care and want them to benefit, too. I've got one group of friends who not only don't get it, they clearly don't even want to try. It's like trying to give a gift they refuse to open.... :( :-?

Honestly, WE get it, so who cares? I wish my friends would love him the way I do but they are not all that intelligent! :D Join your local Parrot Head club like I did and you will have lots of pholks to share your JB loyalty with! Keep the faith and FINS UP!!

I can deal with it up to the point where they are calling us bad people and say we are a bad influence to society. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but that's just ignorant considering all the good work PH clubs do as well as a fan site like BN with all that we've done with Crash for our troops in Baghdad.

(I was just teasing about the Lil' Jon thing... I can't stand him... but I like quoting him sometimes... WHAT!)

I have some friends that came aboard as fans a long time ago and over the years have become sort of ambivalent towards Buffett. Some are the ones that can't see past "Margaritaville" and some just aren't into the whole parrothead aspect. The others have simply lost touch over the years and don't keep up with all of his latest releases. The trick, as someone mentioned, is to casually slip a Buffett disc into the mix. I did this not long ago and the next thing you know they were asking who it was. Before the album was finished they said they were gonna go buy it. The record in question? License To Chill. Still, there's going to be folks that don't "get it" either way, via Buffett's songcraft or the whole parrothead phenomenon...

What a baffling discussion. In 18 years of Buffett loving I have lived in 5 states and known hundreds if not thousands of people. I can assure u that likely 90% of them knew i love Buffett just through casual conversation or other means. I have never had anyone say anything more "severe" than "I don't like him". Very bizarre that some hang around folks who "degrade" them for liking Jimmy.

I was in a Walgreens the other day picking up some Parrot style door prizes.. because they were cute, and original, I picked up all of one Item that they had. the 50 ish woman who was stocking in the area asked me what I was going to do with all of them. I am never shy about being a ParrotHead, so I told her I was a parrot head and they were for Door prizes.. she made a face that looked like a prune, and said her husband was a Musician and no real musician would play a Buffett song... well of course the fire flue from my eyes, as I told her about the supposed Parrot heads she was bashing and pretty much gave her a rundown of Last years State of the PHlock report. and some of the stuff that our local group had done over the last year. I told her that the next time her serious musicians made that type of an impact on their world and their communities, then she could brag. but until they did she needed to learn to keep her mouth shut about things she knew nothing about. I then took my parrot purchases to the checkout. told the manager who was running the register that his employee needed a muzzle till she learned what she was talking about. and left the store.

I get the exact same reaction. Finally learned to just keep cool and not even try to explain it.

It's like having a Harley. If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand anyway. :pirate:

Just do your thing and don't waste your breath trying to explain it to them. They'll either eventually get it, or at least tolerate it. And as Dr. Suess so wisely put it, "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I have always believed beautiful music is in the ear of the listener. I am a frequent lurker on Pat Metheny's website/discussion board, American Garage. (Pat, if you are unfamiliar, is perhaps, America's greatest jazz guitarist/composer) Over there, Buffett is not "real" music, just junk, like this lady's husband would have you believe. I have to laugh...one man's music is another man's waste of time. Guess it really is all about your paradigm! Me? I love it all! I can live without my MTV, but don't take away my CD collection and my MP3 player! :D
