3 of my top 5 you can not get in the states. One of those is a Reposado.
So I will give you my top 5 you can find in the U.S.
Anejo (aged at least one year) Tequila tends to be my favorite.
1. Milagro "Reserve" Anejo
2. Chinaco Anejo
3. Tonala "Reserve" Anejo - great buy at $48.00 per bottle
4. Casa Nobles "Triple Distilled" Anejo - Black bottle gold leaf
5. El Tesoro Anejo - another great buy at $44.00 per bottle
This next list would make my top 5 but are way way overpriced. I have tasted them, and although they are a superior product, they simply do not outshine the others enough to justify the cost.
1. Supreme Especial Anejo
2. Don Julio 1942 Anejo
3. El Tesoro Paridiso
Best Tequila I have ever tasted
1. Chinaco "Millennium Reserve" Anejo - it retailed at $400.00 per bottle. On very rare occassions it can be spotted on E-bay for over $1500.00 per bottle. If I had the money, I would buy one. This is the nectar of the Gods.
Great Bargains
1. Tonala Anejo - square ceramic bottle
2. Casa Nobles Anejo - Blue white ceramic bottle
3. Corazon Anejo
4. Milagro Anejo
5. Don Julio Anejo

Thanks for the heads-up. Sounds like I need to do some hunting. Hard to do in a state where the government owns and controlls all the liquor stores... But hey, I love to have an excuse to travel.

as with any alcohol it's all in the taste of the user and the way it's used. For example..
Reposado's and Anjeo's generally do not taste good in Margaritas. Use Blanco for that.
Shooting tequila's can be blanco, reposado or a "blended" tequila like Jose Cuervo and others. However, blended tequila's are rot gut bottom of the barrell and should only be given to people you want to see get sick.
Sipping tequila's are usually Anjeo's which have a higher wood type taste to them and are very smooth. However, to each their own and Reposado's and Blanco's can be used for sippping.
All the ones mentioned above are great but I am not sure why Herradura is not mentioned when it had been the gold medal winner in tequila.
Also, depending on the area of country you are in you can get good Mezcal's. Believe it or not Milagro is often called a mezcal for some reason. In addition, if you can find it anywhere other than Puerto Vallarta try a Ricilla. It's usually a home brewed version of a tequila and mescaline blend

You are correct in your generalizations, yet, Herradura reposado and a few other reposados make excellent margaritas. I would never make a margarita with an anejo, but I would use reposados in place of or in conjuction with blancos (silver) in making an outstanding margarita. Some tequilas are made only for margaritas - Take Lapis blanco for instance, straight it taste terrible, mix it in a grapefruit, yes grapefruit margarita and it is one of the best margaritas you will ever taste.
Some tequilas need to be complimented / paired with food like chocolate and jicima or paired with cigars. San Matias Anejo is a fine tequila, but in my opinion it is the supreme tequila to paired with a good cigar. When smoking a cigar, San Matias Anejo shoots straight up to the top of my list.
As stated all three (blanco - reposado - anejo) can all be of a high quality making them sipping tequilas.
Herradura Anejo, Herradura Reposado, and Herradura Reserva Anejo are all in my top 15, they just did not make my top 5. I don't know which gold medal you are speaking of, as Herradura has won hundreds of Gold medals. I do know that some of the Gold medals won by Herradura did not place it up against some of the Tequila's mentioned. For instance, Corazon Anejo got a 94 and a 97 rating from Wine Spectator Magazine. One must consider the source of the Medal or rating.
As far as Milagro - MILAGRO ANEJO MILAGRO REPOSADO MILAGRO SILVER and MILAGRO ANEJO ROMANCE COLLECTION including MILAGRO ANEJO RESERVE ARE NOT I REPEAT ARE NOT MEZCAL. The laws in Mexico are very very strict and a product can't be labeled Tequila unless it is made in the tequila region using 100% Blue Agave.
Milagro does produce a Mezcal product but last I checked, they did not put the Milagro name on it.
Mezcal is not Tequila, and can't ever be mistaken for tequila. It is not made with Blue Agave cactus, it is made from the heart of the Mezcal Plant. The primary source of the drug mezcaline. Some Mezcals do blend with tequilas, but they are not even close to tequila. Calling a Mezcal good is like saying Budweiser is good beer. To each his own I guess.

And his tequila is extremely good.
Always been a fan of his, we went through two bottles of that one weekend, and that's all I remember about those two days.

If you saw this summers mini tour by Hagar, or any of his birthday bashes in Cabo, or his week long stints in Reno, you would see the comparison.

Given this thread, I suppose the question that begs to be asked is, which Sammy tune could Jimmy cover, and vice versa? (Note, that it says "could" cover, not "should.")
My vote would be for Jimmy to cover "There's Only One Way To Rock," just so I could hear Peter shred away. I have no idea of what Sammy could cover. Fins, perhaps?

Patron Silver is not bad, chilled, if you are looking for a silver. Not sure how it tastes warm tho.

I put Sauza Commemorativo Anejo and Sauza Tres Generacions down there with Patron Anejo, and at $42-$54 a bottle, not really that great a bargain for the quality of what is in the bottle. Especially when you can get Don Julio Anejo for $44.00 bucks at Bevmo and sometimes $38.00 at Costco. Don't get me wrong, Sauza is a good product, just not great IMHO. I serve it as my bottom shelf stuff when acquiantances come over, I save the great stuff for friends. Obviously my bottom shelf is a lot of peoples top shelf

Patron Anejo = $57/ locally - overpriced for what you get, I think
Tres Generaciones = $43/ (perhaps a bit of a sentimental favourite too in that my first real glass of sipping tequila was two fingers of Tres Gen)
Commemorativo Anejo = $25-$28/ locally, and as low as $21/ in Albertson's/Walgreen's.
I have a bottle of Don Julio Anejo in the cabinet that my tongue doesn't get as excited to taste as the Tres Gen. Don Julio was about that $44-$46 range so it stacked up fairly well in that regard. Thinking the El Tesoro is next on the list of things to pick up. (Chinaco is served at Adobe Gila's, and they have their list ranked from top to bottom with the Chinaco at the top... care to guess what is the bottom?)
Now.. the Milagro Reserve Anejo... that is hidden in the back of my cabinet along with the 18 year Jameson's...
and I should say that the Commemorativo is a good end-of-the-workday, and sharing-with-non-tequila-drinkers-who-are-curious tequila. Not a great or a celebratory tequila.

I think a more likely set of covers would be Jimmy singing "Red Voodoo" from Sammy's album of the same name, and Sammy singing "It's Midnight and I'm Not Famous Yet." I can already hear both of those in my head.
