By the way, most expensive is not always best.
So, as a tequila newby who actually really enjoys Cabo Wabo, Sammy Hagar and Buffett.... What are the, lets say, top 5 tequilas in your view? I really am curious to try some new stuff.
3 of my top 5 you can not get in the states. One of those is a Reposado.
So I will give you my top 5 you can find in the U.S.
Anejo (aged at least one year) Tequila tends to be my favorite.
1. Milagro "Reserve" Anejo
2. Chinaco Anejo
3. Tonala "Reserve" Anejo - great buy at $48.00 per bottle
4. Casa Nobles "Triple Distilled" Anejo - Black bottle gold leaf
5. El Tesoro Anejo - another great buy at $44.00 per bottle
-very good and from time to time, good friends will ship me a bottle because it is not available locally.
This next list would make my top 5 but are way way overpriced. I have tasted them, and although they are a superior product, they simply do not outshine the others enough to justify the cost.
1. Supreme Especial Anejo
2. Don Julio 1942 Anejo
3. El Tesoro Paridiso
Best Tequila I have ever tasted
1. Chinaco "Millennium Reserve" Anejo - it retailed at $400.00 per bottle. On very rare occassions it can be spotted on E-bay for over $1500.00 per bottle. If I had the money, I would buy one. This is the nectar of the Gods.
Great Bargains
1. Tonala Anejo - square ceramic bottle
2. Casa Nobles Anejo - Blue white ceramic bottle
3. Corazon Anejo
4. Milagro Anejo
5. Don Julio Anejo
You could add Sauza Commemorativo Anejo in the great bargains.
I put Sauza Commemorativo Anejo and Sauza Tres Generacions down there with Patron Anejo, and at $42-$54 a bottle, not really that great a bargain for the quality of what is in the bottle. Especially when you can get Don Julio Anejo for $44.00 bucks at Bevmo and sometimes $38.00 at Costco. Don't get me wrong, Sauza is a good product, just not great IMHO. I serve it as my bottom shelf stuff when acquiantances come over, I save the great stuff for friends. Obviously my bottom shelf is a lot of peoples top shelf

Patron Anejo = $57/ locally - overpriced for what you get, I think
Tres Generaciones = $43/ (perhaps a bit of a sentimental favourite too in that my first real glass of sipping tequila was two fingers of Tres Gen)
Commemorativo Anejo = $25-$28/ locally, and as low as $21/ in Albertson's/Walgreen's.
I have a bottle of Don Julio Anejo in the cabinet that my tongue doesn't get as excited to taste as the Tres Gen. Don Julio was about that $44-$46 range so it stacked up fairly well in that regard. Thinking the El Tesoro is next on the list of things to pick up. (Chinaco is served at Adobe Gila's, and they have their list ranked from top to bottom with the Chinaco at the top... care to guess what is the bottom?)
Now.. the Milagro Reserve Anejo... that is hidden in the back of my cabinet along with the 18 year Jameson's...
and I should say that the Commemorativo is a good end-of-the-workday, and sharing-with-non-tequila-drinkers-who-are-curious tequila. Not a great or a celebratory tequila.
First I thought you were talking about the new Sauza Conmemerativo Anejo reserve, my fault, yeah at 28 bucks, the original is a good bargain. If you get the El Tesoro Anejo, ice the bottle down, never ice down the tequila directly, instead place the bottle in ice water to chill, shaking in a chilled shaker over aerates the tequila and kills the flavor. My point being, El Tesoro Anejo should be served chilled.
Now to my original thought, your tequila cabinet and my tequila cabinet need to get together for a play date. What day and time is good for you?

As far as Milagro - MILAGRO ANEJO MILAGRO REPOSADO MILAGRO SILVER and MILAGRO ANEJO ROMANCE COLLECTION including MILAGRO ANEJO RESERVE ARE NOT I REPEAT ARE NOT MEZCAL. The laws in Mexico are very very strict and a product can't be labeled Tequila unless it is made in the tequila region using 100% Blue Agave.
Milagro does produce a Mezcal product but last I checked, they did not put the Milagro name on it.
Mezcal is not Tequila, and can't ever be mistaken for tequila. It is not made with Blue Agave cactus, it is made from the heart of the Mezcal Plant. The primary source of the drug mezcaline. Some Mezcals do blend with tequilas, but they are not even close to tequila. Calling a Mezcal good is like saying Budweiser is good beer. To each his own I guess.
you are preaching to the choir here dude. However, the first time I searched for Milagro on the internet they were calling it a mezcal. When the first bottle arrived at my house I was like BS this is no mezcal.. like I said you are preaching to the choir.
oh and the only reason I said no to most reposado's in margaritas is for a lot of people it would change the taste and they wouldn't like it because most people are not used to any good tequila in a 'rita
your point is well taken,, I meant no offense by my reply and as a gesture of good will, the tequila is on me. When in california,, email me and I will break out the good stuff.

I saw him play with David Lee Roth a few years ago and he blew Diamond Dave away!!!!! He had these two hot women bring him Coronas and Margarita's . He would pass them out to the people in the crowd and he had a riser behind the stage where Roadies picked people out of the crowd to wztch the show from behind him..

Wow...too much good info hereabouts!
I think I need to print out this thread and keep it nearby as a "Tequila Handbook". So many good recommendations...thanks for all the schoolin'! Unfortunately, I live in Pennsylvania where the selection of Tequila is slim to say the least (the Orwellian Liquor Control Board ensures that there aren't many options for buying hard liquor in PA)
I'm also loving the idea of a Jimmy/Sammy tour. If they ever could get the logistics worked out, it would be unbelievable. Can you imagine the parking lot tailgate scene??

My two favorite music makers of all time!!!! Sammy and Jimmy. God, would I love to see Jimmy visit the Cabo Wabo Cantina for Sammy's Annual B-Day Bash. I've said this for years, that these two are the best two entertainers in Rock/Trop-Rock industry. How cool would it be if they toured together. They could call the tour "Buffett/Hagar - Wasted Away in Mas Tequilaville." brought to us by Cabo Wabo and Margaritaville Tequilas and Cornona of course.

I'm about ten minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, so the closest state border is Ohio/West Virginia, which is about an hour drive (although Maryland isn't much farther).
In terms of selection, the best place to buy hard stuff in my neck of the woods is the Wine & Spirits Superstore in Monroeville. Luckily, it was one of the few locations the PLCB recently allowed to be open on Sundays (though only from noon to five), so I can now get booze on Sundays if I need to.
Still, the range of available tequilas leaves a bit to be desired. The usual El Cheapos are always there, and they often have 2 or 3 more premium brands, but nothing like what you guys have been discussing in this thread. I think most of the tequila buyers around here either dump 'em in Margaritas or just do shots, so the sippin' varieties probably don't sell well.

Tried some Gran Centenario Anejo on a run thru MSP to MCO in Sept. Was not impressed. Combo of the bartender being unable to answer any questions about it, and it tasting like a bourbon more than a tequila..

too, it looks like they changed the labelling for the Sauza Conmemorativo Anejo (at least on that site.) The 1.75 ml bottle label looks a lot like the stuff I have found locally; have not seen the newer, oranger label that is cheaper.

and yes the Sausa bottle has changed. We saw it out here in Cali about 4-5 months ago. Bottle different Tequila the same - good bargain.

Looks like I need to bookmark the BevMo site. At the price they are quoting for the Conmemorativo, it's cheaper than local I believe.

Midwest...hmmmm....House of Blues in Chicago is always good. Here in Indy, there's always my backyard, but there might be a neighbor who might object sometime after midnight....

I'm still leaning towards the BN rendevous at KW M'ville for this show.

CMH = ICAO talk for Columbus, their designator for Port Columbus airport. Tho, in my case, the closest one is really TZR - Bolton Field.
and yes, Candy and I will be there. Get your number into the Coconut Telegraph list with Ragtop, and I am sure we can find one open bar to have a drink in in KW.
