OK some of y'all know one of our dogs got skunk'd 8 days ago - well I've tried sooooooo many things and NOTHING has worked - this dog STILL stinks!!! So far we've tried:

tomato juice
woollite
vinegar
a skunk odor removal product from PetSmart
dawn dishwashing soap
dog shampoo

There is another recipe that involves peroxide but can't use it because he was sprayed straight in the face and that is the only place the odor is.......this dog has had so many baths in the past week - he's clean as a whistle but smells to high heaven

Anyone have any idea?? :( :( :(

PHAW, since he got it right in the face, might it be down inside his ears? Maybe swabbing some of the skink odor remover in there might help, or a trip to the vet? :(

Thought of that but he's 1/2 lab and 1/2 malamute - has lab hair - there's practically no hair on his face to begin with :(

I only other thing I can think of trying is scent remover that hunters use to remove human scent from their clothes and bodies. We've used it for cat urine and skunked dogs and it works okay. Might be able to swab some of that on his face...

I shudder to think about the replies when some people read my answer to you , but here goes anyway.....

Get the vinegar and water douches (you may need alot of them depending on the size of your dog)...apply them and leave them in.

That is the most important part...if you rinse, you'll still have the smell.A friend gave me this advice when my dog Lucy got skunked and it worked when nothing else did (and I tried everything you already mentioned).

Good Luck

Call around to Vets in your area for a product called XO. If it is still availabe, it usually does the trick. Had to use it once on one of my Old English Sheepdogs, talk about hair!!

SmifferPHAW, I emailed my bro (the pharmacist) and here are his words of wisdom:

Shave the words “I will not chase skunks” in his hair and dunk him in a vat of Febreeze! (Don’t expose dog to any chemicals!! Just Kidding!!).

Once a ½ a day has gone by, it’s usually too late. Now the only remedy is shaving off hair and time.

Harem1 works for a vet and they usually give this same advice.

Ship the dog to Michi for a month or two...... he'll come back smelling like Corona and lime but that's better than skunk!!!!

I haven't encountered the skunk problem - yet.

But my friends that live in the country SWEAR by the powered douche - the old fashioned kind that you mix up.

LMAO
Can I claim it as my new screen name?

Sammy has been sprayed twice. Trouble is, it permeates his whole body, not just the fur. It's like he ate a skunk or something.

They never learn, either.

Do like the girls in high school gym class always did. Spray on a ton of perfume and hope nobody notices

Mythbusters recently tackled this one.

However, I got bored and turned it off after all of the common home remedies failed.

Tomato juice--Failed
Douche-Failed

Our dog was sprayed in the face too. I used the peroxide recipe but I was very careful in putting it on. The peroxide recipe is the only thing that worked for our dog.

Google is great

Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid dish soap: it worked. Apparently the mixture releases oxygen compounds that bond with thiols and neutralize their smell.
