I too have a hard time believing anything long term about Garth Brooks. He is amazing at marketing, though. Whether or not you like his music, you've got to admit, he knows how to market a product.
I see that as a detraction, not a reason to like him.
Don't be so hard on Garth. He was a HUGE fan of Chris Ledoux. When Chris was dying, Garth flew to Wyoming to offer monetary and spiritual support to his family. Chris had been battling with his cancer for several years and it just wiped them out. He actually had a tour scheduled for this year and when he died, Garth offered to do the tour so that Chris' band- The Western Underground- could still feed their families but they just couldn't do it without Chris. I think that Garth did this song for his friend Chris Ledoux. Wouldn't surprise me if the proceeds go to Chris' family.
By the way did you guys know that Mac Mcanally had a hand in several of Chris Ledoux's songs too!!!

I think that's absolutely wonderful but it doesn't change my opinion of Garth's overzealous marketing campaigns and efforts to be the biggest selling artist of all time just so he can have his name in a record book somewhere.

He was an awesome bronc rider, a great artist and a terrific person. He sang about his adventures on the road as a rodeo cowboy, about his life and his loves. He was the JB of the cowboy world. It was really sad to lose him and great of Garth to honor him with a song!
Chris LeDoux was one hell of a singer and songwriter.

Just curious though, I've heard it mentioned before, where does it say that JB listened to Chris? I'm not arguing the point, just curious where you got your information from.
I'm not saying that JB listened to Chris Ledoux. I'm saying that Chris' style of music in that he told stories of his adventures, played his own brand of music and didn't cow-tow to the popular stuff, and for years was an "underground" hit with his fans was very similar to JBs style only in a different genre.
Chris started as a rodeo cowboy and used to record his music-songs that he wrote about being a rodeo cowboy- at his parents' home and sell them out of the back of his pick-up @ rodeos. The rodeo cowboys (and cowgirls) absolutely LOVED him but no one else knew who he was... until Garth Brooks sang a song called Much Too Young, which was about a burned out rodeo cowboy and in it he sang the line "a worn out tape of Chris Ledoux, lonely women and bad booze seem to be the only friends I have at all." All of a sudden, Chris Ledoux rocketed to the top of the charts. At the time, he was ranching in Kaycee, Wyoming and, like most ranchers, was going broke.
Just a little background on Chris Ledoux. As you can see, I'm a big fan. If you want to know more there is a great book called Gold Buckle Dreams that is Chris' autobiography.

I love Chris LeDoux, too. Have the boxed set and a bunch of CDs. I was just curious because another poster at one point kept saying that Chris LeDoux was a big inspiration on Jimmy Buffett. I never saw the correlation he was talking about. I do understand your thinking about them being in the same vein, though.

Yeah, just the fact that they both are REAL people, singing about things that they know and love and not changing for anyone!

Yeah, but I guess that is no different from many other entertainers. The fans love him and they willingly pay their money and buy his stuff. I also think that to stand up in front of a huge audience takes a lot of ego so most entertainers are a little full of themselves.
