Post by Johnny's Lounge »

Maybe a little further south, saw a town named Shallotte on the internet that was south of there, sounds like it's not too far from beaches.

I'm not looking for a vacation spot if you know what I mean. (I just won't be leaving tomorrow either)

Are there palm trees in the area, weather nice? Any outside concert venues down there?

Tell me all about it please.

Thanks,
Sick of short summers and longer winters

I'm not a resident of the area but I can tell you it's nice spot. Weather is nice most of the year, Winter obviously being the big exception. It's a college town so there's lots of clubs and things to do. You're also only about a 3-4 drive from the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) and probably less than an hour from Myrtle Beach if tourist traps are your thing.

Plenty of beautiful shoreline.

Good music. That's Hugo Duarte's home turf. http://www.hillbillybeach.com

Plus everything Jahfin already said.

Actually, you might find some palm trees in the Wilmington area but they're certainly not indigenous to there.

LOVE the area...wish there were better jobs down there. if you are looking for cheap digs for a nive trip try the brunswick plantation. they have a deal going now for a 1 bedroom apt on the golf course for $750 a month. its about a 10 minute drive to shallott, ocean isle and the other local beaches. about 35 minutes from both wilmington and myrtle beach. my favorite place is wrightsville beach. in my opinion, one of the best beaches in the us and the blue water grille on the intracoastal waterway is one of the greatest places to hang and listen to steel drums or the standard jimmy buffett sounding band.

if you go around shallotte, try sharkeys on the way to ocean isle right over teh bridge, very cool hang out place with some really great regulars. they make you feel right at home. they built a new place right next to it that seemed more of a party place but i never made it there. if you want more info, email me.

We go down close to there every year on Oak Island. It is a vacation spot, but not a tourist spot if that makes any sense to you! You can go fishing on the longest pier in NC, crabbing, shrimping, shelling (nice conch shells) or just sit on a nice beach enjoying a beverage! It is not built up and touristy like Myrtle beach.

Hmmm, you guys are slipping. Not a one of you said, "it's in North Carolina"!

It really is a nice area with a lot of beaches, historical sites in the area and not too pricey. If you are looking for night life and the like then you will be better off going to Myrtle Beach but if you want to relax it's a fine place to go.

Wilmington has plenty of "nightlife" such as the Soapbox Laundro Lounge and Marrz just for starters.

I told my wife that if I posted this question here we would get some info. I couldn't think of a better bunch of people to ask. I really do appreciate it.

How bad are the winters really and are the jobs down there tough to come by? This wouldn't be for retirement either (we're mid 40's).

We don't go crazy like we did in the early 80's but steel drums, Buffett type bands and country would be us.

Starting to sound like it would be a nice place to live. 8)

At least it would be a shorter drive from NC than it is from Mass!

jobs down there are tough...i interviewed for a job over the phone for a 'executive' position and was their final candidate till they told me the salary of 28,500. no way could i even fathom moving down there even though houses are 150k. but its still my favorite legitimate place to move too (key west and the islands is out) but by all means go down there, its great.

Shallote is a neat little town - Great seafood!. I am a BIG fan of eastern NC towns though. They are very friendly however may still be a little behind the times with some things. To get a better nightlife(and employment options)...closer to Wilmington may be the answer. I would also suggest looking at Southport as well......Beautiful little town. Further north on the intercoastal you have swansboro, edenton, washington, ...a wealth of small towns!!! Edenton is right on the Palmico sound is a quaint town!!!

NC still gets cold on the coast....usually around 40 and 50 is the coldest although it has snowed there before as well!

I LOVE the NC coast and have traveled extensively....I also have been to MANY of the small towns and can tell you alot about them...just pm me!
There's this one particular harbor.....
