Rounded up?

Post by SMLCHNG »

Was talking with co-workers today. Both of them round off the amounts they write in their checkbook for purchases (debit card) or checks written. As an accounting person, and a banker for many years, I simply could not understand why you'd not write in the exact amount of the dollars spent.

Good lord, I don't even remember the last time I wrote a check. Between the ATM/debit card and online billpay, don't need the checkbook.

My dad the retired civil engineer and retired math teacher has ALWAYS rounded up. Example: he writes a check/makes a debit purchase for $14.92 (little Columbus Day allusion there!)-he will deduct $15.00 from his checking account. Never bounced a check in his life.

I can't deal with that...I have to know TO THE PENNY what's in my account. Ironically, I'm the one who used to bounce checks.....

Amazingly.. many years ago we had a customer at the credit union I worked at thought it worked like a credit card.. you spend the money, and make payments back to it..

I use exact amounts when I write a check, but I admit this:

When I deposit a paycheck, the amount is, for example, $1154.26. I will record the deposit as $1150.00. Near the end of every year, I re-balance the checkbook and have a nice Christmas bonus!

Odd, but makes much more sense than the rounding off of checks or debits..

When I worked at a credit union - we had 2 customers who did that with both deposits and checks.........they had a "tidy" sum at the end of the year :o :o

I can't do it - it would bug me

I balance it--- to the penny--- once a month after calling the automated number and recording every debit and credit.

I can remember days when I had $2.54 to last to the end of the month.

If you use MS Money or other software you can download your statement from many banks. If the amounts dont match exactly you have to correct each one so in this techno age rounding up would MAKE work, not save it

If you go to the trouble of recording your checks, and actually attempting to balance it, how could you possibly round things up or down? Boy, that would absolutely drive me nuts.

When i was president of my professional association, I borrowed the books from our treasurer and found they were out of balance---went back and redid 22 months of bookkeeping to get it to the exact penny.

What is a checkbook????

I don't even know how to balance a checkbook. Hubby handles all our finances. I couldn't even tell you how much money we have right now. I do know, however, how much I'm allowed to spend!!

checkbooks are history here ..... that is what eftpos .. credit cards etc etc are for ......

But .. when I did have one - I didnt round it to anything as never could balance it

Back then I was reconciling hundreds of millions of dollars each day at work in an account to the exact cent, but could not figure out my own account

I write down in my checkbook the exact amount of the check, but when I "balance" it, I always go to the next higher dollar. For example, if my checkbook balance is $1951.12 (year & month I was born- :D ), I'll mark down that I have $1950.00. Then when I write a check for $53.80 (my age- :D :D ), I'll subtract $54.00 from my balance.
If my auto-deposit from work shows $1766.48 went into my account, I add $1760.00 to my balance.
I've been doing this for 26 years.
Sounds crazy, but I always have a few $$$ for my fun money and never bounced a check.
