Scarlet Begonias wasn't just alright...it just plain sucked.
It sounds even worse the night Jimmy showed up in Margaritaville KW after they finished with the album. It's painful to hear him sing it that night.

Count me in as a "Scarlet" fan. I think Buffett did a good job of picking a cut that isn't a radio Dead standard and one that's also well suited to the band who can (and do) play up the island vibe.

I think "Sugar Magnolia" would sound cool with a tropical vibe.

That's actually one of my faves on the album....go figure
If you think Jimmy's version sucks, you should hear the Dead's version.
It's rather boring and monotone sounding. Same goes for the original Uncle John's Band. Any Dead tune would be improved by Jimmy but then "most" of his covers are better than the originals artists in my opinion.

I agree with you on the Dead's version...
Actually, the best version of Scarlet Begonias that I've heard is by Sublime...I forget the album it's off of (just woke up), but if you haven't heard it, it's got the trademark Sublime spin to it- and it doesn't any better than that!

I agree about liking a lot of Buffett's covers better than the originals, can't say that about his Grateful Dead covers though.

Agree 100% there!

I always welcome a good cover, but only if it's played sparingly. Not like BEG. It has to be a "treat" that he throws into a random set list. It can't be a regular tune, and I don't like covers of songs that are overplayed to begin with. So, scrap any cover that would come from the Dead's American Beauty album, and then we'll talk about possibilities. I go to the shows to hear Jimmy, but it's also nice to be a part of something unique, and if that is being one of only 30,000 phans to hear him play "Ship of Fools", something by Jack Johnson, or anybody else for that matter, then that's cool by me.

Granted "Friend of the Devil" has recieved it's fair share of airplay but not every song from American Beauty has been overplayed (at least in my area).

As a DeadHead, I must say that you are way off on this one, Scarlett Begonias is a Dead Classic, and if you have not heard them perform it live, then you don't know what you are talking about. Jimmy has some good covers, but he has yet to bring the magic to any Gratefuldead song.

As far as Sublime goes, they were a manufactured band, nothing original there. See Ziggins.

hmmm...after re-reading this entire line of dialogue, I can't see where we were discussing 'orginality.'
and...
I have seen the Dead several times, including the last 2 shows in Chicago and they sounded great, but we hadn't mentioned live covers, had we?
and Ziggins? they're alright, but the charisma just isn't there.
sorry, man- I can't agree with you on anything there.

Being a big Deadhead, I always thought the chourus of Franklin's Tower would go well with One Particular Harbour. I think it would work as a brief interlude like Twist and Shout during We Are the People Our Parents Warned Us about.

Also, what about Fire on the Mountain, Sugar Magnolia, Bertha, or One More Saturday Night?

I wouldn't want to hear the Dead sing any of Jimmy's songs and vice versa.

The Dead covers are the only JB songs that I bypass.

i'm at a loss on this one still....i fail to understand why people think that jimmy needs to do more covers. Personally i like southern cross as the cover, but i don't need it to be played every show i go to....And i definetly don't want to see more covers added.....I don't know about anyone else, but i like jimmys stuff and thats what i want to hear at the shows. Personally, you can take all the covers out of the show and insert something thats not on SYKBH.

Fire on the Mountain>Volcano might make a nice segue.

Don't worry, you won't, Jerry is dead.
