Help a Vet in need

Post by Sam »

Not real sure where to post this....I thought I would start it here... Move it as needed.

A vet recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan bought a home and Katrina destroyed it and insurance refuses to pay.

His Mom started this website for helping him: http://www.helpmysoninmississippi.com/ Go there for complete info.

PHINPOWER UP and more on the way for him and his family.

Thanks
Sam

How exactly was this guy able to get a mortgage for a home in that location without having flood insurance?

Interesting. Up here you cannot get a mortgage for any property that lies within a 100-year flood plain without having flood insurance.

I can only speak of FL of course.... but I am guessing its the same way there. I agree...should be mandetory...but in FL we are lucky to have ANY kind of insurance at all. Highest $$ in nation for ALL... auto, health, worker's comp, malpractice, home etc

Being the skeptic that I am, I looked into this further. Seems real to me, or else someone went to an awful lot of trouble.

Considering all the scams that have popped up since Katrina (as reported in several news outlets) I think the best thing to do is to continue to give my husband's hard earned money to the Red Cross and Salvation Army - along with Pasado's Safe Haven - they're one of the Animal Rescue Groups that were active in the animal rescues. http://pasadosafehaven.org/index.html
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I agree with Connie.
Regardless of any and all difficult stories, I choose not to do ANYTHING through
privately set-up websites. Too many con artists out there in cyberspace. :x

I gave directly to the Red Cross. 8) :)

It bothers me that thier name is nowhere to be found on the web site. But an address is. So we head to the property tax web site and find:
Current Owner: WATTS DEVONNA AND NOVA ALLEN
Location: 8730 N TANGERINE PL TAMPA FL 33617
1800 sq ft home in subdivision of Druid Hills was purchased by quit claim deed in Feb 2005 for 20k UNDER assesed value. I could be there in about 14 minutes and play detective....but I wouldnt go at night.... nor would I live in that area. Their particular home may be nice... but the area is in the news alot. It doesnt say if this is a rental home.

For some reason.....It also bothers me that they are asking for $1. I think donating to recognizable charties is the way to go.

I have found no sign of it being a hoax and to be every bit legitimate so far...........anyone that finds that it is a hoax as I will admit it possibly could be ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,please by all means let me know...... I know where I got the link from is normally a reputable source. I gave what information I could. If you don't want to risk it then don't. I can easily understand why people are sceptical of such, after so many phony vets are out there...

Everyone can take it from there.......I had some questions about it when I first read it, and I checked as best I could on it and I found nothing indicating anything negative. It is easy enough to find the bank on the internet and a number to contact them about the account. It is easy in someways to set up such an account for whatever cause, in general... and it does leave a paper trail through the bank that can be traced.

Give as you can and will...or will not! Be leary of being ripped off is always wise. If I got burnt so be it. If I was right then all the more credit to a brother Vet...if not then shame on them for fooling me.

If it is a scam, then someone spent alot of time and effort covering their tracks.....

As far as Flood Insurance...not everyone realizes it is a separate insurance.....not every insurance agent, will tell you that or offer it.
Many people suffered from flooding along the "Mighty Mississip" not too many years ago...

I also prefer to donate to nationally recognized charities that distribute the money as is deemed appropriate.

I also appreciate some of the skepticism voiced here and did not find anything about this on www.snopes.com which is where I always verify things.
