Christmas in Keys

Post by delboy »

We are travelling to Key West from England over christmas. I have only ever been there once before and being one of Englands biggest fans I must say it bought a tear to my eye. When the bar tender found out that we were from England he said the drinks are on Jim (more tears). My wife thought I was mad but we are back this Christmas with our 2 boys. I was just wondering if anything special happens there. Are there lots of lights to see? Father Christmases? Is the Great Man's bar open? Will I have a good time? We are staying in a bed and breakfast 2 blocks away from the Great Man. Last time we were there we went into Captain Tony's does anybody know if this is open Christmas? Any idea what the weather will be like? What should I do and not do. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much/

Will you be there over New Years?
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

have been several times " around " Christmas . .the first/second week of December . .

and let me tell you . .it is magical . . .

the first thing I noticed were all the Santa sleighs being pulled by dolphins . .

never had seen that and it blew me away . .

also make sure to walk around the Old Town area . . locals decorate their homes in the most " creative " ways. . and the Bed and Breakfast homes are straight out of a magazine . .

:o

the whole town takes on a very festive feel . . .and it does seem like you are experiencing " Christmas in the Caribean . ." . .! !

one year we were there , and they brought in a snow making machine . . .! !

great photo op , that one . . ! !

have a great time . . it will make you want to come back every year . . ! !

:D
. . " and I finally disappear . . . . BUT NOT YET ! ! "

If you stop at one of Shell Mans locations, you can pick up some pretty cool and original tree ornaments with a keys flavor. My tree is just about what you would expect to see here, flamingos with santa hats on, naked Santas in scuba gear, and of course a team of 8 dolphins harnessed to a Christmas boat...etc.
There is always one display on a store front in Islamorada, just north of Coral Shores High School. It's a huge team on Angelfish towing a boat that is mounted on the facade of the store. You can't miss it.

Best thing to do on the island itself is stroll through the side streets and get away from the madness. It can be a real treat.

There is one very cool interesting thing to take in on the mainland. If you head into some of the neighborhoods in Miami, you will get a feel for what it's like. Much different than a cold climate. Fireworks, everybody outside waiting for midnight, neighborhood block parties, pig roasts...alot of fun. Music, bailan todo el noche and so on. Just something you don't see when you are stuck inside on a cold Christmas Eve.

Although I do miss that to some degree.

I have spent the last 5 Christmas' and New Year's in Key West. Yes the Great Man's restaurant/bar are open on Christmas. The store is closed though.

My husband and I do an abbreviated Duval Street Crawl on Christmas Eve and usually have a really good time.

I love Key West during the holidays. The house are decorated so nicely. I love walking around the neighborhoods after dark to look at all of the light.

You will love it during the holidays!!!

The weather has been great most years. We only had one year where there were a couple of chilly days. I put on a sweatshirt, but still wore shorts. We have been able to hit the beach every trip. I have not gone in the water (only like swimming in the water in the Caribbean), but would imagine it might be a little chilly.

I hope you have a great time. I arrive in Key West on 12/22 this year and leave on 1/3. I cannot wait.

Will be in Key Largo for Christmas this year. I can't imagine a better place to spend Christmas than The Keys. So close to Florida, but so far away from it all.

well I know one thing for sure...they aren't "in the south". On the occassions where I had enough booze for the meantime and wanted sweet tea with lunch or dinner....NOBODY down there served sweet tea. I said to one waitress, "this is the south, how can not one place have sweet tea"...her response, "we ain't the south". I wanted to say, "if you use 'ain't', your in the south" :x

nah.. they use "ain't" other places too. and I think the South ends about Lake Okachobee. After that, you're on Island time.

I don't think you were trying hard enough. Remember, a real pro would skipped sleep to hang out on the Porch of Indecision. :)
