SHOULD YOU SLURP WHEN YOU EAT YOUR NOODLES?

Post by Sam »

I have absolutely no idea how many of the following ( IF ANY AT ALL) are true. I got it in an email and decided to share it here.....seems humorous.

SHOULD YOU SLURP WHEN YOU EAT YOUR NOODLES?

Dining etiquette in Japan is tricky. It is considered extremely impolite to pour one's own drink when eating with others you pour your companion's drink and your companion pours yours. On the other hand, it is considered normal and nonoffensive to make loud slurping sounds when eating noodles in Japan.

DOES COFFEE HAVE MORE CAFFEINE THAN COKE?

Eighteen ounces of an average cola drink contain as much caffeine as an average cup of coffee.

IS LAUGHING GOOD FOR YOU?

Laughing is aerobic. It provides a workout for the diaphragm and increases the body's ability to use oxygen.

HOW MANY CATS AND DOGS ARE THERE IN THE U.S?

There are more than 100 million dogs and cats in the United States. Americans spend more than 5.4 billion dollars on their pets each year.

WACKY LAWS

- In Virginia, it's against the law to have a bathtub inside your home. It's also illegal to visit a cemetery for any other reason than visiting the deceased, a law which begs the question, just what other things would one be doing with the dead in a cemetery, anyway?

- In Illinois, it's illegal to eat in a place that is on fire. It's also illegal for bees to fly over the town or in any of its streets. So, who's gonna cite the bees?

In Pennsylvania, it's illegal to sing in the bathtub.

- In Kansas, it's against the law to practice knife throwing at men in striped suits. I suppose other types of suits are alright, however.

- According to Michigan law, if a man and wife kiss on Sunday, the guilty party shall be punished. It's also illegal to abandon a hoop skirt on any public street or sidewalk, with a penalty of $5 for each offense. And it's against the law for a woman to cut her hair without her husband's permission.

- In Florida, it's illegal for a single, divorced, or widowed woman to parachute on Sunday. It's also against the law to hold a turtle race within the city limits or for rats to leave docked ships. So, who's gonna cite the rats -- the same people who cite the bees in Illinois?

- In Georgia, an ordinance was passed that prohibits saying the phrase "two fried eggs and a fritter for a quarter" in an attempt to prohibit slang talkin'. It's also against the law for chickens to cross streets. One supposes the old joke doesn't apply in Georgia.

- In Minnesota, it's illegal for anyone under the age of 12 to use a telephone without the supervision of an adult.

- In Hawaii, it's illegal to put pennies in your ear, never a good idea, regardless.

- Finally, according to the law in New York City, "it is legal for a woman to ride the subway topless since it is legal for a man to ride the subway topless." However, it's against the law to have an unclothed mannequin in a store window.

Yes, in Japan it's good etiquette to slurp your noodles/soup. I believe they find it offensive if you don't. Here's a quote for you from this website:

"Never ask for a spoon to eat your soup; simply grab the bowl with one hand and dig the bits of tofu, seaweed, or mushrooms with your chopsticks as you bring it to your lips. It's perfectly polite to slurp, specially if the soup is hot. Ignore the gaijin (non-Japanese guys) glaring at you from the other side of the bar; chances are they haven't read this HOWTO nor been to Japan."

However, in America, beings that it's the opposite etiquette rules, you then run into the issue of which rules to follow in whose house? When in a Japanese restaurant, do you follow Japanese or American etiquette rules?

Personally, even in a Japanese restaurant, I absolutely hate when someone slurps and I can't help but give them the evil eye. However, perhaps I'm the big meanie butt and I should slurp right along. Don't know.
