Gift-Wrapping the World Series

Post by mings »

First let me say, I am not a fan of either the Astros or the Cards. In fact, I'm a Phillies fan (woe is I) and I have reason to dislike both teams. However, I am a fan of baseball.

With that said, last night's game was rediculous. When the second base umpire called the Cardinal runner out (I am drawing a blank on his name) when he clearly was safe, the game was over right there. That out and the open base changed teh way Oswalt could pitch to the next batter. Not to mention to the fact, that any momentum that St. Louis had was instantly diminished. The umps should have stopped the game right there and awarded the LCS to the Astros.

The big problem - there needs to be a booth review of questionable calls. This one, and the call in the White Sox-Angles game clearly show the need for this. I know baseball isn't perfect, but when playing for the LCS, World Series or whatever, there needs to be the ability to call the game FAIRLY.

Remember, I'm not a fan of either team. I just an old school fan who wants to see a fair game.

And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

Question will be, how would you go about implementing this system?
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

There could be a guy in a booth upstairs who, like in football, has access to the video feeds of whatever network(s) are covering the game. It's not hard to know when there is a call that is questionable. At that time he would review the feeds and different camera angles and make his decision. However, to keep this person from running the game, his call would not count until the umps conferenced. The managers could request a conference, and then the umps would essentially ask the "booth dude" what the video shows. Like in football, there would have to be enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. Strikes and balls would not count for this. Mainly, I see it as a way to accurately judge the baserunners and questionably (un) fielded balls.

Just a thought.

I'm just glad we can move on to the World Series. Hopefully it'll be a sweep. I don't care who wins, but with only 8 channels of TV, I want FOX back. :-? :-?

Some people don't watch now because of the length of the games, you are asking for 5 hour games.

Human error, player, managers and umpires is a part of the game. What really needs to be addressed is the quality of the umpire and their apparent desire to be a part of the show.

Actually, I think the process that I propose is no longer than the current process. We can even limit the teams ability to request the conference. I don't imagine that this would be used often. I just want to set up some fail-safe to keep the game from being determined unfairly. I understand human error, but in the case of last night, I feel that "human error" is not an acceptible explination.

Ummmm. No.  The news starts at 9pm on Fox here in Denver and that way I get to bed at a reasonable hour.

I'm not a fan of either team either, and have DESPISED the Cardinals for over 20 years now. HOWEVER, that was clearly the WRONG call at second base, and it's really too bad. I'm all for an instant replay system-whatever it takes to make the RIGHT calls. We live in an age of technology-let's take advantage of it. If, by making the right calls, the team I happen to be cheering for loses, so be it. If victory isn't earned, it isn't deserved.
That being said, I'm happy for both the Astros & White Sox. I don't know who I'll cheer for in the World Series-probably the White Sox, as I'm mostly an American League fan, but I'm happy for Jeff Bagwell & Craig Biggio. I hope the series goes all seven games, and that the TEAMS determine the winner, and NOT the umpires.

Amen. I heard a quote once: The best umps/refs are those whose names you don't know.

As a child I spent many an hour at the Astrodome with my family. My grandmother was a huge baseball fan and every time we would go see her in Houston we'd go to games.

Despite the call I'm glad the Astros finally made it to the World Series.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
