Anheuser-Busch discontinues the Bud Pong drinking game

Anheuser-Busch Cos. of St. Louis is discontinuing its "Bud Pong" drinking game because some contestants were playing with beer.

"The promotion guidelines specified the use of water in the cups, not beer, so as not to encourage irresponsible consumption," company spokeswoman Francine Katz said Tuesday in a statement.

"Bud Pong" called for drinkers to play a game of Ping-Pong and drink a cup when they lost a point.

The game became popular among college students, and a story in The New York Times on Sunday quoted Katz as saying "Bud Pong" was "catching on like wildfire." Anheuser-Busch is seeking to create promotions for adult activities at bars and clubs as beer sales slip.

"As a company that has invested more than $500 million to promote responsible consumption among adults and to discourage abuse, we believe it is important that our intentions with Bud Pong not be misperceived," Katz said.

The Times' story quoted Chris Shannon, 22, a senior at Drexel University in Philadelphia, as saying of beer pong: "It's awesome. If you win, you win. If you lose, you drink. There's no negative."

Anheuser-Busch, which makes Budweiser, was promoting Bud Pong tournaments and providing Bud Pong tables, balls and glasses to distributors in 47 markets, including some college towns.

How did this woman issue this statement without breaking out in hysterical laughter?

Must have been a great marketing meeting. "Hey, here's an idea. If we encourage them to drink water, that should really increase sales of our product."

What a richard!
