Coach rowing. Unfortunately, to do what I want I'd have to be independently wealthy in order to dedicate the time & energy. There's so little money in collegiate rowing. High school is even worse.
So since this is a little ways off (note: not saying impossible) then I want to own or run an ad agency. The means to an end, and the means aren't so bad.

"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

Even as we speak, my friend (I am looking for a new job). I'm not "cool" with where I am or what I'm doing now. I had interviewed recently (got down the final "cut") for exactly what I wanted-a Compliance Officer position at a non profit organization (one that I won't name, but the leader of a cause that I'm passionate about).
So, meanwhile, I keep the icky job (need the $$ and the insurance) and keep looking. Sent two resumes off tonight. Hope springeth eternal

yeah. I'm looking too. Advertising is very transient, and it's time I transient-ize myself somewhere else.phjrsaunt wrote:Even as we speak, my friend (I am looking for a new job). I would love to write murder mysteries. I'm currently working on one now, pirate themed. I'd like to be able to support myself with writing. Also helping folks with their small business needs such as pr, marketing, start ups. Another thing I'd love is event planning.
About rowing if you have another source of income with reasonably normal hours and weekends free you should be able to coach at the hs level. Here in order to coach you just need your substitute teaching certificate which only requires 60 college credits. You could get a paid position as a coach or just help out. At the collegiate level you could find a subject you love and work toward a degree allowing you to teach. Then you teach and coach. My son is running on a D1 team and his coach teaches as well as coaches.

again coaching tennis if it's not about money is doable in your community and high school. If you can pass the criminal background check you should be able to find a way to do this. But that would be around your regularly paying job hours.

I think I am about to do something about it.
I am one of those people that can fix and install just about anything. My friends call all the time for help with stuff. I am going to entroll in a couple of night classes and start my own business as a handy man. It is surprising how many people will pay people to do basic things.

Dumb and drunk as I was, you know I would do it all again.

Actually, I currently coach part time (used to be full time) for Saint Joseph's Prep. I started when I was teaching there, but continued after I left teaching. At the Prep (and I'm sure all private schools) you don't need any certification, but the hiring process is nothing easy. Basically, you're not hired if you don know your stuff and you're not a risk/liability around the kids. (I've seen coaches that are the latter and it's not pretty.) I'm staying involved by coaching part time, but to really affect change and be a part of the success of a program, for a kid to look back and say, "Coach Mingle made me a great rower." is what I want. And that's only possible by coaching FT.OceanCityGirl wrote:I would love to write murder mysteries. I'm currently working on one now, pirate themed. At the college level, you don't need to work there, but coaching at that level is even more demanding on your time. I have several friends that coach college at some of the highest levels and unless they have one of the few fulltime salarys available. Yup. Some positions are full time in time needed, but only pay part time, and this happens at schools like Penn, Princeton, etc. I know that I could hack that, but I also know that there is little room for advancing much beyond that. I guess I have expensive tastes. I like to travel, and I need to get myself to a point where I can manage both. Several of my friends and acquaintences in the HS level coach becuase they have a job or income that permits them to dictate their own schedule. That's the point I'm working towards. Until then, I'll be working 9-whenever the job is done during the week, and then rising at 5am on the weekends to spend teh day at the river. And considering where I am in life, I'd have it no other way.
