My wife works as a speech therapist at a local elementary school. They just got the announcement about the guidelines regarding costumes for the school's Halloween party this coming Friday:
Then, the memo stated that in addition to these restrictions, parents should refrain from allowing ther kids to dress up as anything that may be scary...um, IT'S HALLOWEEN!!!
Man, I'm glad I grew up when I did - when kid's could still be kids
Victoria's school has some pretty strict guidelines about the whole Halloween thing. No demonic costumes, nothin' scary, etc. etc. etc. They encourage kids to dress like historical figures (and I don't think they mean Adolf Hitler), religious figures, etc. etc. This year they are also making a push for "healthy snacks" instead of candy and stuff. That's the best part of Halloween is getting all the little kids amped up from pixie stix.
This year, Victoria is gonna be a pirate and 'lil Tony is gonna be a T-Rex.

So they can't dress like a devil, but a naked guy in a white collar with a tootsie roll on a string is ok???
Haha! It's funny you mention that. One of the costumes she tossed around for a while was being a nun. And then at the costume shop she wanted a costume that was 1/2 angel and 1/2 devil. She was mega bummed that she couldn't be that. We have a gazillion angel costumes anyway from various Xmas pageants and such.

Yup. That's stupid. At my ex-girlfriend's college few people celebrated Halloween because it was a pagan holiday. They were silly. This is just making rules because they fear the one looney parent who will complain that little Billy has nightmares now because his classmate was the devil. Maybe Billy's hiding something... Maybe she should think about that.

love it, a school promoting students coming as religious figures. i hope it's not a public school. right or wrong there will probably be some parent that blows a headgasket...
I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

You grew up? Say it ain't so.
Somewhere out ancestors are rolling over in their graves (whoops, inappropriate imagery) or laughing hysterically at us because we have to be protected from everything. Geez, is there nothing we're not afraid of anymore. Can't see this, can't say that, can't hear this, can't eat that - we're a nation of wusses!

Not quite the truth, although it definitely has Pagan origins. The Halloween anyone has celebrated in our or our parents lifetimes has largely been of Christian making: http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/ ... ge=origins
Don't even get me started on what I think of misinformed Christians and Halloween.

Whenever, someone swings too far to one side (in this case - Halloween = paganism) then they're most likely wrong about something. Extremes are never good. When I went to visit her, just before halloween, and I knew nothing of these thoughts, I got into a bit of a discussion with her roommates over the whole thing. No wonder they didn't like me. Anyway, luckily she (ex-girlfriend) didn't share their views, but what's it matter anyway? If she did I wouldn't have been there to see her.

Honestly?? I think that parents just take crap like this way too seriously and brainwash their kids to think everything is offensive and wrong. It's not the kids that get freaked out..it's the parents that *think* their kids are freaked out.
