A collection like this is long overdue. But I honestly can't recommend it because, other than one song by Hourglass (a pre - Allmans project featuring Gregg and Duane), it doesn't have ANY Allman Brothers Band tunes on it. It can hardly be a definitive Southern Rock collection without the Allmans. My guess is, they weren't included due to some sort of record label issues.

Who is Target and Doc Holiday? Noticed 1/3rd of the songs are from the Skynyrd/Van Zant family of bands. Absent where not only the Allman Brothers but no Gregg or Betts solo, no Charlie Daniels, no Hydra or Grinderswitch, no Barefoot Jerry, No Delbert McClinton or Dr John.

House of Blues had an essential southern rock double CD out a few years ago that was much better then this set.

Yep, there's lots of folks missing. I'd never heard of Target until this box set but apparently they were a band out of Memphis. Doc Holiday I'm familar with as they used to play these parts (NC) quite a bit back in the day. In fact, they're still together but like a few other Southern Rock bands, are more popular in England.

The way I look at it, it's a nice try but the definitive Southern Rock box has yet to be made. Hopefully the next time out they'll get it right.
