This song is one aspect of Buffett I hope he never changes. I come across people on these boards sometimes that would like to imagine songs like this and "Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw)" never happened. I definitely don't believe in their idea of Buffett revisionism. It's these very kinds of songs that first drew me to his music to start with. I see the same thing going on in the Lynyrd Skynyrd music community where the vast majority of their fanbase is Christian (not that there's anything the matter with that) and they try to recast the image of the original band as saints. They were hell raisin', dope smokin', whiskey drankin', ass kickin' Southern boys. I guess these days that sort of image is considered "politically incorrect".

Evidently if you tell yourself something long enough, and loud enough, you can convince yourself. We are talking the band that put out, "That Smell" on vinyl, right?

"That Smell" and "Needle and the Spoon" were actually anti drug songs. At the end of their career, Skynyrd had cleaned up. Ronnie Van Zant has been quoted as saying it was the "first time they'd seen (their) audience in seven years". I think it's great that they finally saw the light and realized they couldn't continue to live the lives they were living. I'd much rather still have bands like them around because I can't say I subscribe to the "live fast, die young and leave a good lookin' corpse" philsophy of life but to try to revise their history (or that of
any band's) is doing them a disservice if anything. Same goes for those that try to project a "clean" image for Jimmy Buffett.

Yep. Listening to the song mentioned, you really don't get an impression they are advocating the lifestyle with the "The smell of death surrounds you" line; was just thinking that it is difficult to write and sing about something like that without a bit of personal experience and resonance with the topic. Hence, trying to claim Skynard was squeaky-clean is just foolish.

Jahfin-
This song is one of the reasons I became a JB fan 30 years ago. And part of the reason I remain a fan.
That said, I'm not the person I was 30 years ago. Maybe when I post (or people like me post - if there are any!) I downplay that aspect of Jimmy's music, out of habit. That is, the habit of being a responsible parent, business owner, etc. All that serious stuff.
And maybe that's why I enjoy JB's music, too. It's an opportunity not to be so serious all the time. It's fun!
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
I don't think anyone really wants to re-write history.

I don't think there's any reason to downplay songs like "My Head Hurts" or "Why Don't We Get Drunk", they're a part of the character Buffett created years ago and is still a big part of it to this day. I'm referring to people that want to sanitize that side of his image or worse yet, pretend it doesn't exist.

Guess I don't understand.

Meh, JB's a flawed human being like all the rest of us and people don't have a choice about that. He's 58 years old, for goodness sake. I'm 52, and I sure as shootin' don't do some of the things I used to anymore!

Grammatically speaking, of course, Hump Daddy.

I'm referring to a certain faction of his fans in general and yes, some of them are at this board. In fact, this board itself tries to portray a "clean" image which is totally up to the site owner himself so it's his prerogative, I just don't happen to agree with it.

Jah, "clean image" of ourselves as posters or clean image of Buffett?

I gather the board it self is supposed to remain "clean" which I've always found odd at best since Buffett's image is far removed from that. Again, there's not anything that can be done about that since that is the board admin's position.

Jah, Obviously I don't know all the history here, but doesn't it depend on what you call "clean"? Jimmy is the only one who could run the board to meet his "image", but he's not in charge. So that leaves the judgement call to the board admin. I just don't see the problem.

I for one don't see a correlation between Jimmy's words and actions of 30 years ago, to how phjim runs his modern day BuffettNews discussion boards. I don't think what he said or did then was "bad" or should be admonished, as I don't think I need to punish myself for my actions back in the day. That being said, it
is amazing that my friends and I are still alive to talk/laugh about it, and I wasn't all too far from Polly Purebred for the most part. Even at that, I hope my kids don't do what I did, and far worse, what my husband did.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, that was then, this is now.
Out of curiousity, and RinglingRingling may best be able to answer this... What are the rules / policies on the MVille WebBoard, which is technically Jimmy's? Is it no holds barred, anything goes - sex, drugs, rock and roll, and all the cussing you can muster?

Could such a thing be possible?

I guess I didn't make myself clear since I referenced a couple of his older songs but I'm referring to the Buffett of today just as much as I am 70s era Buffett. I know phjim has certain rules and I respect those. I'm referring more to fans who like to project some kind of squeaky clean image onto Buffett (past and present) because they object to the sometimes risque lifestyle rendered in his songs and books.

It goes in waves, but it is a bit more anarchical over there...
