I have a PC, but I'm pretty sure I'd prefer a Mac.

You haven't seen my laptop, have you? It's literally held together with duct tape..... I'd be way more interested in the funtionality of the Mac than in the form of either one....

So, Mac people and geeks (and for those of you who don't know me, I use "geeks" as a warm term of endearment!): how hard is it to transition from PC to Mac? Can it be done? Can my Word, Powerpoint, mpeg, avi, and jpeg files be transferred? How much "stuff" do I have to replace? Wireless hub? Cable Modem? Educate me, please?

UN fortunately I'm too invested in the PC craze to make the switch right now. Damn.

Durn near everything will switch. You'll neeed MS Office for Mac, but you will be able to open all of those files on a Mac with the appropriate software. I made the switch several years ago, and do not forsee myself going back. My Powerbook is technically outdated (because newer versions exist), but unlike my old PC, after over two years, it still runs great, and I rarely feel I need any more speed (though that doesn't stop me from drooling over the newer, better, faster machines).
The switch easier to make now than it ever has been, and it will probably get easier with the new Intel Macs coming next year.
Oh, and Mac people take "geek" as a compliment.

i have a couple of PCs including one i built from scratch, and a couple of Macs. Macs are infinitely more stable and less hassle than any PC will ever be. Transitioning to Macs is a breeze. Apple has alot of info on their website to assist with the "switch". Before I switched over a bought a copy of the book Mac OS X The Missing Manual by David Pogue and published by O'Reilly. it was very helpful and includes a section entitled "where'd it go?" which details the differences between windows and OS X. It covers things from the perspective, okay i know how to do "fill in the blank" on my PC. how do i do the same thing on my Mac?

I also find the Mac version of Office easier to use than the windows version. i haven't had any problems with word/excel docs translating between PCs and Mac. the only issue i have is several of my clients use MS Project for their development schedules and there isn't a Mac version available. intersting enough the only programs that have crashed my Mac are word and excel..... gee, i wonder who the problem is?????

apple stills sells the one button mouse along with their new multfunction multi-button mouse. i use a logitech 3 button mouse with my powerbook. any USB mouse will work with a mac.

it's actually a 4 button mouse with a track ball allowing both vertical and lateral scrolling.
