Parents of boys...*update p6*
Would any parents of boys kindly share successful potty-training stories?
My son is 21 months and he's definitely showing signs of being ready. Only problem is, my daughter, who also started using the potty very early, basically did it herself. She woke up one morning and decided to wear panties instead of a diaper, and never looked back.
I'm definitely going to have to work a little harder at it with my son, but he's staying dry at night, hates his diaper, loves underpants, and knows to tell me when "pee coming." He's just not all that fired up about the potty itself.
Sooooooooooo.... I know this is way OT...but I have a lot of respect for BN parents. Any books you read that gave some good advice? Any tips or tricks you can share?

If he's a true boy, put a tv in the bathroom with sports playing.buffettbride wrote:Would any parents of boys kindly share successful potty-training stories?

my sons were much harder than my daughter. She was completely potty trained by her 2nd bday with no accidents. They had no interest in it til they were closer to three. Periodically i'd give it a shot and get no where.
The only advise I have is be patient. Wait til they show an interest and really seem ready. It's probably better to start a bit later but have them be ready then to force the issue too soon. Also charts with stickers and prizes helped my sons. When they hit an age where they notice other people wearing big boy underpants that helps too.

i definitely could be jumping the gun a bit, and since my daughter was so easy (she was 18 months), maybe i'm expecting too much.OceanCityGirl wrote:my sons were much harder than my daughter. okay don't have kids but all my friends with boys pretty much had the same experience. they also take the position that mom's been mom for the first few years, but now it's time for dad to take over.....
the kids pretty much all decided it was time, much like your daughter. aim was another issue
as a kid my brother and i had a little step stool to stand on.....

I think he's a bit too little for the target practice. I suggested letting him stand to do it already, but hubby said that wasn't a good idea yet. If he could stand and go, though, I bet he'd think it was more fun.MojosMama wrote:Cheerio target practice. Toss in a handful and tell him to aim for them. A few of my friends swear by it, lol!
(Cody did it the way Victoria did - just woke up potty trained one day)
If I could take a week off work and work with him on it, though, I think I could do it.

Forgive me, I am not there yet (parenting - at least I don' think so). But is potty training really worth a week off of work???buffettbride wrote:I think he's a bit too little for the target practice. i'd be happy to turn it over to dad!!! i'm not sure he has the patience to make sure the boy gets to the potty every time though.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:okay don't have kids but all my friends with boys pretty much had the same experience. they also take the position that mom's been mom for the first few years, but now it's time for dad to take over.....

he seems ready to me, based on my experience with victoria, but i don't want to push the whole thing too hard and have him freak out or anything.
we got the step-stool. we got the little attachable potty seat. all systems are go. just need to get my 'lil shooter in place!

Well...sorta. I never had to do that with my daughter, but I'd definitely take a few days off to make a long weekend so I could be there to make sure it happens. Day care is kind of iffy in this area. Plus, I'm a control freak when it comes to change happening for my kids. I want to be in charge!mings wrote:Forgive me, I am not there yet (parenting - at least I don' think so). i think i'm gonna try the standing thing. i'm not a fan of the child pottys, but the stool is ready to go. he loves runnin' 'round nekked butt so i figure he'll get a kick out of standing to do it.OceanCityGirl wrote:he might like standing better. You could get him his own child potty or you could get one of those step/seat sets for your bathroom. I did cheerios with my boys.

I used a potty chair and put it in a common room (family room) to start out, then moved it to the bathroom. I also let him run around naked. I taught him to sit and pee because he was too short (height wise) to reach the toilet standing. When he was tall enough, he began standing. We had hardwood floors, so messes were easy to clean up. I am training my 2nd one now. No more hardwood floors, just carpet.
I made the mistake of buying pull ups (Buzz) and now he won't go on the toilet anymore, just in Buzz. Now he just keeps going in them so that he can have the other pattern Buzz on!
My first one was like Victoria- just decided he wanted to wear underwear and has never had any accidents. I'm not getting that vibe this time around!

I heard them talking about this on the radio the other day. They recommended a book called potty training in a day. I think the concept is to let your child run around BUTT NEKKID and somehow that teaches them to go potty...
I cannot relate as all I have trained to potty is my dog...and he learned quickly to scratch at the door...
