I also love seeing all the big trades happening with the Yanks 2 biggest rivals. I wonder when George will make his big move...

I would love for Juan Pierre to be patrolling CF for the Yankees. But the Marlins are being complete assholes about it and demand either Wang or Cano.prthd1958 wrote:I would LOVE to see Juan Pierre patroling centerfield for the Red Sox. As for giving up to much for Beckett, They managed not to trade their young lefthander Jon Lester. We have gone from a very old starting rotation to a young one if they manage to trade Wells to San Diego.
I also heard Thome and cash to the ChiSox for Aaron Rowand.
Thus Konerko is a free man. (hmmm...is Giambi willing to DH)

Essentially, in the old days, when Baseball was the dominant sport (primarily the Great Depression Era, also know as Larry's middle age years), the offseason was just as exciting as the regular season. People would gather around their Hot Stoves, listen to their radio for news of trades, etc., and discuss them.

There in lies the problem with the Yankees. They have over the years traded away almost every decient player in their minor league system. They found themselves a couple of gems with Wang and Cano but if they are not willing to trade them the Marlins certainly don't want to take any of the overpaid over the hill players on their roster. The Red Sox may not have Theo but we will be able to reap the benefits of his restocking the minor's for the past 3 years.jonesbeach10 wrote:I would love for Juan Pierre to be patrolling CF for the Yankees. Very true, the yanks have traded off all their good minor leaguers and not gotten much in return. But... its good for the minor guys since the yanks have alot of positions tied up with named players. Wher ein the organization does anyone that plays SS have a future to go.prthd1958 wrote:There in lies the problem with the Yankees. Why would BJ Ryan want to go to Toronto other than the fact that he gets to save 1 out of every 5 games for Roy Halladay?
If I'm the Yankees, you try to convince him that he will be the lefty set-up man for the Yanks, but they will assimilate him into the closers role as Rivera gets older and he will be the Yankees closer by the time his contract is up.

Toronto is going to be a pretty good team next year......and with a closer now they will be that much more dangerous.jonesbeach10 wrote:Why would BJ Ryan want to go to Toronto other than the fact that he gets to save 1 out of every 5 games for Roy Halladay?

I heard that the Yanks got in touch with him first and asked him if he'd come to NY to set up Rivera, but he said he definately wanted to be a closer. Toronto signing Ryan has to be upsetting to the Yanks since they seemed to have their eye on this guy even before the season ended.jonesbeach10 wrote:Why would BJ Ryan want to go to Toronto other than the fact that he gets to save 1 out of every 5 games for Roy Halladay?

If the Jays can add another good starter to the rotation, they are going to be a legitimate threat in the AL East.

While I will give Theo Epstein credit for drafting some good players who will help the Red Sox for years to come. It should be noted that 3 of the 4 minor league players the Red Sox traded for Becket were drafted and signed by Dan Duqutte. The only one who was drafted by Epstein was Harvey Garcia, who was the last player added to the deal when Florida threw in Mota.prthd1958 wrote:There in lies the problem with the Yankees. The latest Red Sox rumors. Some seem to be a big stretch.
Clement for Lowe (Per Gammons)
D. Wells for D. Roberts and a pitcher
Manny to the Mets, D'Backs or Angels
Clement to the Brewers for Overbey
If they can't resign Damon they will go after Tori Hunter

Wow Clement for Lowe? I haven't heard that one yet. Did Gammons give any reasons why the Sox would want to get Lowe back?

Epstein wasn't around long enough for his prospects to become trade-able. You won't be able to judge that for a few more years.BottleofRum wrote:

I heard at one point that of ALL the players drafted by Duquette in his first 5 years with Boston, only 3 EVER made it to the major leagues with any team. Nomar was one, the other two were scrubs.
Maybe his drafting improved, but early on, Duquette sucked.

I'll update my post.....
Duquette's draft picks that made it to the majors. Bold indicates they are still in the majors.
1994: Nomar Garciaparra, Carl Pavano, Brian Rose, Donnie Sadler, Michael Coleman
1995: Steve Lomasney, Matt Kinney, Cole Liniak, Paxton Crawford, Rontrez Johnson, Juan Pena, Pat Burrell
1996: Chris Reitsma, Dernell Stenson, John Barnes, Rob Ramsey, Jason Duchscherer, Shea Hillenbrand, Aaron Harang
1997: Travis Harper, Angel Santos, David Eckstein, Nate Bump, Bret Prinz, Dennis Tankersly
1998: Adam Everett, Mike Maroth, Josh Hancock, Lenny DiNardo, Mark Texieria, Dennis Tankersly (again!)
Burrell and Texieria never signed with the team. Tankersly did not sign the first time, but he did the second time.
So the list is better than I originally said. Note, however, that not ONE single player drafted by Duquette in his first 5 years is currently with the Red Sox, nor was with them when they won the series.
