I think that my Padres may trade Mark Loretta and or Adam Eaton to get more righthanded power. The Padres have a very good looking 2nd baseman ready to make the jump in Josh Barfield. Getting Castilla was a good start, as third base has been problematic for the better part of 3 years. (Joe Randa was ok in his 2 months). The Padres also have some very good young arms that are ready to make the jump. Tim Staufer, Ceasar Carrillo & Clay Hensley. What the Padres need in a power hitting 1st baseman and a speedy outfielder.

Many Bobby Valentine sightings at the GM's meetings. Guess we'll have to put up with that dork again. Hope he leaves his funny nose and glasses in Japan

Cubs re-sign Perez at SS... still negotiating for Furcal.
Things don't look good for Nomar unless he is willing to play some different positions.

If he's willing to go to the outfield, that is... I think that's highly unlikely. Ramirez is solid at third... well solid as long as his groin holds up.
I'm thinking there will be a club willing to play Nomar at SS, but he probably won't get the money he wants.

all the clubs that could/would pay him what he wants already have solid SS's and most 3rd's. But would he be a big boost for a lower spotlight team who could afford him?

BTT---This should heat up now that the awards are all over.
The Yankees have offered Matsuia 4 year, $50 mil offer, and they are close.

An article in yesterday's Trib said that the Cubs have said Nomar is free to talk to other teams.

I hear he will be named the spanish-language spokesperson for both the Balco Laboratories, and the American Cork Association.

Sammy Sosa Named 1998 Roberto Clemente Man of theYear
Wednesday, October 21, 1998
Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs was named the 1998 Roberto Clemente Man of the Year, Major League Baseball and True Value announced today at Game 4 of the World Series.
The Roberto Clemente Man of the Year Award, presented by True Value, is given to the Major League Baseball player who balances outstanding skills on the baseball field with civic responsibility. In Sosa's honor, True Value will donate $25,000 to the Sammy Sosa Foundation. True Value will also donate $30,000 to the Roberto Clement Foundation and $120,000 more to support numerous charities across the country. This year Sosa accomplished the spectacular feat of hitting 66 home runs, second only to Mark McGwire's 70. He finished the season with a .308 batting average. Sosa has 800 career RBI, 273 home runs, and 1,233 hits.
Off the field, Sosa has given his time, energy and financial contributions to many charities, including the Sammy Sosa Foundation, which works to support children throughout the United States and his Dominican Republic homeland. In the Dominican Republic, he employed hundreds on a construction project, distributed thousands of gifts to needy children and purchased ambulances for emergency medical care and computers for public schools. Sammy and his Foundation also contributed mightily to hurricane relief in the Dominican Republic in the aftermath of Hurricane Georges. "The Man of the Year Ward was created in 1971. The name of the award was later changed to honor Clemente, who dies in a plane crash while delivering supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua," said Bud Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball. "This award has come to symbolize a level of heroism that has surpassed on-field achievements. Previous winners include Willie Mays, Lou Brock Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken, Jr., Kirby Puckett, and Eric Davis, players who feel compelled to give back to the community some of the good fortune they experience."
...followed a year and a half later by this from Fortune Magazine...
Sosa's Charity Mismanaged, On Brink of Bankruptcy
Cubs slugger reportedly did not contribute much cash
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, April 4, 2000 --
According to Fortune magazine, the Sammy Sosa Charitable Foundation in the Dominican Republic has been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy due to mismanagement. Apparently, the Chicago Cubs' right fielder has contributed no significant amount of cash to his charity, which was established to provide relief and support to the victims of Hurricane George in 1998. Sosa is currently in the middle of a four-year, $42.5 million contract with the Cubs. The slugger's primary contribution to the foundation was an office building, valued at $2.7 million, for which he received a tax deduction of at least $1 million. St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman, Mark McGwire, with whom Sosa was engaged in the 1998 epic home-run race, contributed $100,000 to the foundation, according to the New York Post.
Reports by a whistle-blowing board member, who earned $4,000 a month as a consultant to the foundation, led to the story in Fortune magazine which noted several of the foundation's managerial indiscretions. Investigating the foundation's tax returns, it was determined that it allocated just $82,842 in relief supplies in 1998. Several tenants in the foundation's building do not pay rent; including Sosa's sisters who own a boutique, disco and beauty salon. It was also alleged that charitable funds were used to purchase a sports car for Sosa's brother. Sosa, himself was even said to have pocked a $1,500 down payment for an apartment intended for foundation use. Finally, the foundation was reported to have violated several provisions promulgated by the National Charities Information Bureau.
As the news of the foundation's mismanagement broke, approximately 7,000 pounds of donated food, clothing and medical supplies were being stored in a Miami warehouse at a charge of $2,000 a month. Currently, the foundation provides inoculation and dental care to children as well as education to young mothers. Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, responded to the story by saying, "I can virtually assure you that there has been no impropriety, " according to the New York Post.
