Yes. And interesting that the Trib ran an article the day before this signing saying Eyre's agent just had a great meeting with Kenny Williams. Ha! Win the WS and players still would rather play for the Northsiders!

Sosa's Charity Mismanaged, On Brink of Bankruptcy

Cubs slugger reportedly did not contribute much cash

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, April 4, 2000 --
According to Fortune magazine, the Sammy Sosa Charitable Foundation in the Dominican Republic has been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy due to mismanagement. Apparently, the Chicago Cubs' right fielder has contributed no significant amount of cash to his charity, which was established to provide relief and support to the victims of Hurricane George in 1998. Sosa is currently in the middle of a four-year, $42.5 million contract with the Cubs. The slugger's primary contribution to the foundation was an office building, valued at $2.7 million, for which he received a tax deduction of at least $1 million. St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman, Mark McGwire, with whom Sosa was engaged in the 1998 epic home-run race, contributed $100,000 to the foundation, according to the New York Post.

Reports by a whistle-blowing board member, who earned $4,000 a month as a consultant to the foundation, led to the story in Fortune magazine which noted several of the foundation's managerial indiscretions. Investigating the foundation's tax returns, it was determined that it allocated just $82,842 in relief supplies in 1998. Several tenants in the foundation's building do not pay rent; including Sosa's sisters who own a boutique, disco and beauty salon. It was also alleged that charitable funds were used to purchase a sports car for Sosa's brother. Sosa, himself was even said to have pocked a $1,500 down payment for an apartment intended for foundation use. Finally, the foundation was reported to have violated several provisions promulgated by the National Charities Information Bureau.

As the news of the foundation's mismanagement broke, approximately 7,000 pounds of donated food, clothing and medical supplies were being stored in a Miami warehouse at a charge of $2,000 a month. Currently, the foundation provides inoculation and dental care to children as well as education to young mothers. Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, responded to the story by saying, "I can virtually assure you that there has been no impropriety, " according to the New York Post.
Seems there were a lot of "virtual" things going on. Jerk-chicken sounds about right....

Oh, I digress...we're supposed to be talking about the future of baseball...(sorry folks )...go Cubs. :D ...but they do need another middle-infielder and healthier pitchers....

I heard, within the past couple of weeks, that the Red Sox are interested in the GM of the Washington Nationals. If this is true, the Red Sox should consider him seriously. He knows his stuff and he also got into his job a great deal. Plus being from the Boston area helps too so he knows how to handle the Boston media.

There is a report, I think on MLB.com, that says that the Marlins will trade Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Rangers for Blalock and a pitching prospect.

Heard that today. Good trade for the Rangers....not sure if the Marlins should be breaking up that staff just yet. The Rangers have a prospect (whose name escapes me), that can take over for Blalock.

Yep. The Rangers still need pitching so it makes sense.

I do think this may be a bad move for the Marlins, though. They're already letting Burnett walk, so their pitching staff will be down Beckett, too? That leaves them with Willis and a band of minor leaguers to compete for the 2-5 spots! If there were more Free Agent starting talent available, that'd be one thing, but there is nobody for them to go and get. Burnett, Millwood and Morris are the best available....

As far as Marlins go, I don't see it as all that surprising.
They're doing a "campfire" sale this fall, though not on par with the 4-alarm fire sales that was Marlins '97, or Padres '92. Delgado will be the next to go, I bet.
Lowell is a salary dump that the Rangers will eat just to get Beckett
(by the way, thank you TEX for taking Phil Nevin off our hands! )
Marlins are gonna go cheap til they can secure a new stadium deal. :x :x :x

I wouldn't be too high on that deal....I think Nady has more good years left than Cameron....and is Cameron going to have his eyesight back to 100%?

Anybody know much about the latest candidate for the BoSox GM job? Wilder I believe his name is? He's currently an exec. with the White Sox I believe? I heard the Sox interviewed him on Saturday.

I thought they had narrowed down to Bowden and Beattie? Is this a new development?

In a couple of years, the Padres will regret letting Nady go, same as they now regret letting Jason Bay go.
