Computer Help - Compress Files

Post by land_shark3 »

I'm going through cleaning up my computer files to move them to another computer. I thought it might save some time to compress the files, but I'm having some trouble.

I have WinACE. However when I "compress" the files to either ZIP or ACE format they are the same size or even larger than the collection of files.

I have it set on Maximum compression. Am I missing something else or is there a better method? And I would really prefer not to have to buy any software.

I use Winrar of StuffIt. You can download both free ....StuffIt does have a trial time frame that will expire but when it expires it makes you wait something like 10 seconds before it works.

Can you burn the data to cds or dvd? Then upload on the other computer?
Or is that what you are doing?

Kim Komando recently had an article about transfering data from one computer to another. You would have to search it on her site www.komando.com .I think it was a USB cable or something. I forgot just what it was...I have it in her tip of the day newsletter I think it was, if I find it, I will post it if you like.
Roll with the punches, play all of your hunches...come what may...

Customer drawings (PDFs, DOCs, XLSs, PRO-E, etc.).

Outlook files (PST)

Then of course there is the important stuff; my music collection.

I have an external hard drive to help with the transition, but I was hoping to speed up the transfer by compressing the files.

Not that skilled.

The last time I went through this, I was able to hook up both computer through our network. However, something happened halfway through and I never got the computers to recognize each other again.

I'm not worried about a storage device. I have an 80Gb external drive and less than 15Gb worth of stuff to move.

I'm just trying to cut down the transfer time because I don't have firewire or USB 2.

These are all large file formats, not a lot of way to compress them.

PDF and images files such as these files are already compressed when they are created, and thus re-compression can introduce distortion or even make the files bigger

Yes, one of my PDFs is 13Mb. I'd hate to see what that is like uncompressed. :-?

A 300+ page catalog of military connectors. Unfortunately, nothing very exciting. :-?
