I need an opinion....

Post by Jason Mason »

Okay, so I'm gonna get a Buffett CD for a friend to go with his Christmas present, trouble is, I'm not too sure which album to get him... My first thought was to get him the Fenway show (which is AWESOME btw..) then I started thinking about Meet Me In Margaritaville, since this would be his first JB CD... but... he loves a bunch of the songs on the Fruitcakes album and Far Side Of The World (obviously he has good taste), I also thought about License To Chill, but figured that would be a little too "yee haw" for him. What do y'all think would be a good first JB CD? Lemme know, but... NO YELLOW ALBUM! I refuse to buy the yellow album for anyone!
I still love old magazines and Snickers bars....

Got to go with Meet (not Meat) for a newbie.... has alot of bang for your buck! My second choice would be BBB&B.... (ebay is selling new ones so cheap). Third choice would be YHTBT... but I think a mostly studio album is a better selection for a first timer.

The one real advantage of Live at Fenway is the DVD-it is a great way to let non-parrothead friends get some sense of what this is all about!

In my experience with newbies ...its hard to understand the live concept until you have been there..... just no explaining a drunk shark on the stage... or an 80 ft lighthouse.... or 500 beachballs hitting you in the face.... not evening mentioning men in grass skirts!!!

No kidding!!

And also my thoughts are that in live shows...Jimmy adlibs alot.... ParrotHeads love it as it keeps things fresh.....well all except Cheeseburger...

but I think for a newbie hearing the songs the way they were written might be a better idea.... Just my 2 cents 8)

Larry, are you hangin' out in the Village again?

As far as an album choice, I would still go with You Had To Be There.
I think it captures a lot of the best vibes from both Jimmy and the audience. 8) :pirate:

Get him MMiM, but also burn him a copy of the Live at Fenway DVD, or Minimatinee 1 if you have it.

I agree that MMiM is the best choice for a first time CD, and think a first live concert needs to be experienced in person before seeing a DVD.

I agree...MMiM is a great start...especially for someone who has heard some of the music but really needs to get the flavor for JB. It's a great collection with a bit of live in with the old and new studio stuff, gives a taste across his entire career, and the booklet is well done, too.

Good luck, JM. Your buddy has a good friend! :D

I fail to see why Songs You Know By Heart gets such a hard time here especially when I've seen so many people name it as their first ever Buffett album. Just because so many of the songs are Buffett standards doesn't make it a bad album. The only thing that keeps me from recommending Meet Me in Margaritaville are some of the lame remakes he included on that album. Some things are better left alone. For an introduction to Buffett there's several import CDs out there that include his standards but also feature some album cuts that give a more rounded approach to all things Buffett.

I would say MMiM, but you could also burn or let him borrow "Tues, Thurs, Sat" so he gets a sense of what the concert energy is like. You could also let him borrow or burn a copy of FSOTW or Fruitcakes if you want.

It depends on the type of music your friend likes at to what to get him. If he likes "new country" then I would go with LTC but if he likes to party, I would go way back to "You had to be there". I wouldn't burn him anything that is commerically available, it's just not cool to deny an artist his due.

I think I speak for a lot of people here when I say this:

Songs You Know By Heart is full of some fine music. In fact, it was that album that originally introduced me to JB. However, I have heard the songs on it so many times that it now is not my first choice for listening.
