Favorite Albums of 2005
No, the year's not up yet and there's still some very worthy albums yet to be released but I was just wondering what some of everyone's favorite records are so far this year. If you have a question about release dates please check http://www.allmusic.com. Hopefully this thread will be more successful than in the past when people felt compelled to list albums that weren't even released this year and then got angry when they didn't understand why they weren't eligible.
Here's my top ten list so far but it will very likely change come December when Ryan Adams' 29 is due for release. I'm sure there's some other albums coming out that will very likely be contenders but this is what I've come up with for now. By the way, no greatest hits or live albums are eligible.
1. James McMurtry Childish Things
2. Mary Gauthier Mercy Now
3. Caitlin Cary and Thad Cockrell Begonias
4. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals Cold Roses
5. Hayes Carll Little Rock
6. Robert Plant Mighty Rearranger
7. John Prine Fair and Square
8. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals Jacksonville City Nights
9. Olympic Ass Kickin’ Team Self-titled
10. Rolling Stones A Bigger Bang
Honorable mention goes to:
John Hiatt Master of Disaster
Son Volt Okemah and the Melody of Riot
Donna the Buffalo Life’s A Ride
And even though they're not eligible since they include previously released material, I really like the new live albums from Tift Merritt (Home Is Loud) and Wilco (Kicking Television).
As far as archival releases I've gotta pick two by Bob Dylan: No Direction Home and Live from the Gaslight.

Hate to say it but Best of the Rest consists of previously released material so it's ineligible and Todd hasn't released anything new this year.Goodman wrote:1. Fair & Square

I'm not trying to start an argument but Best of the Rest was released this year. It may be previously released material, but the ALBUM was released in 2005 so according to the statement in your opening post it should be eligible. If you don't think compilations or Best Of collections qualify, you should have said that when you started the thread.Jahfin wrote:Hate to say it but Best of the Rest consists of previously released material so it's ineligible and Todd hasn't released anything new this year.Goodman wrote:1. Is this where the Donald tells me -"You're fired"? Best might be ineligible but by the controversy we create here debating it , we generate sales in the tens or hundreds. My cut on that is way huge. Makin Music for Money.

Re: Favorite Albums of 2005
No problem. This list doesn't really need to raise as much hackles as it usually tends to which has honestly never been my intention. I take part in them all the time on other boards/e-mail lists and there's never as much hassle as there tends to be on BN. Go figure....LIPH wrote:Sorry, I missed that line at the end. Just think of us as your "friends in low places". I like the line from Groucho Marx that he wouldn't join any club that would have him as a member.Jahfin wrote:No problem. The Rascal Flatts album is a 2004 release.finupbarefootchildren wrote: 5. rascal flatts - feels like today

The Fogerty/CCR disc is a compilation and the Buffett album is a live album so they're ineligible.
Please stick to 2004 releases and remember that greatest hits collections and live albums are ineligible. If you're unsure about release dates please check http://www.allmusic.com. I tried to make all of this clear in my first post but I do greatly appreciate all of the participation so far. Keep those lists coming in.
