I never really noticed the similarity but apparently it was enough for Buffett to pursue a lawsuit againt DAC back when it was first released. This, of course, led to DAC penning the now infamous "Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In Key West Anymore".

Coe has since discounted his racist past as just that but, for whatever reason ($$$$$) he still makes those recordings available through his web site which sends a mixed message to me. Still, I admire a great deal of the work he's done over the years because he is a hell of a writer. I just don't agree with him continuing to sell his racist records, especially if he's against the feelings expressed on them.

Okay.... I was going to PM you, Jahfin... BUT, when I googled DAC's, The Jimmy Buffett Song"(or JB Doesn't live in KY, etc. anymore) the lyrics had nothing to do with what I thought it would have to do with.. does that make any sense to you???

Could you explain this entire thing to all of us... that were afraid to ask.

Without researching the lyrics, I always thought it was DAC's reaction to being sued by Buffett for "Divers Do It Deeper" which does have a tropical feel to it but Buffett doesn't own a patent on all things Caribbean then or now.

Goodman?

As a (so so) guitar player I know that musically "Divers do it Deeper" at some points (especially in the chorus) sounds like "Changes in Latitudes".
But then I've heard other tropical songs that also sound that way too.
Eddy Raven's "Bermuda Triangle and another David Allan Coe song called "Maria".
With millions of songs out there a lot of them are gonna sound the same

here are the lyrics....
Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In Key West Anymore

JODY LIKE A MELODY
PLAY INSIDE MY HEAD
TILL THE THOUGHT OF YOU IS MORE THAN I CAN STAND
JUST TO THINK OF HAVING YOU IS MUSIC TO MY SOUL
YOU MAKE ME FEEL
AS THOUGH THE WORLD IS IN MY HANDS

JODY LIKE A MELODY
YOU WARM ME
AND THEN LEAVE ME
WITH A CHILL
I CAN'T BELIEVE THE SUN WILL RISE
WITHOUT ME LOOKING IN YOUR EYES
AND KNOWING THAT YOUR LOVE HAS MADE ME STRONG
WHY YOU LEFT I'LL NEVER KNOW
THE FIRE YOU BUILT WILL ALWAYS GLOW
I ONLY KNOW I WOKE TO FIND YOU GONE

JODY LIKE A MELODY
YOU WARM ME
AND THEN LEAVE ME
WITH A CHILL
JODY, I CAN'T KEEP MY THOUGHTS
ABOUT ME IN THE DAYTIME
WHEN YOUR MEMORY IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME BLIND
AND LATE AT NIGHT I LIE AWAKE
AND WAIT FOR YOU TO COME AND WHEN YOU DON'T
YOU KNOW I ALMOST LOSE MY MIND

JODY LIKE A MELODY
YOU WARM ME
AND THEN LEAVE ME
WITH A CHILL
JODY LIKE A MELODY...

okay... is there sybolism that I am missing here.. or did DAC just name this in retaliation over a lawsuit????????

That's the wrong song, here's the lyrics. The question marks were in the original, don't ask me why.

There's sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore,
but Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters ??? ??? has a bumper sticker on the door,
it says "Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore."

They smuggled ??? ??? songs,
snitching on the ???,
bringing heat,
where its already too damn hot to die.
Son of a son of a son of a b****,
is whats all that *****'s for.
Jimmy Buffett he don't live in Key West anymore.

Sailing to the Caribean,
Jimmy might well be.
Pictures up in Rolling Stone,
for all the world to see.
The rich keep getting richer,
the poor will just be poor.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.

Now Jimmy's moved to Malibu,
with all those other stars.
He's not down on ??? Street,
hanging out in bars.
All them goddamn tourists,
got to be a bore.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.

So don't tell me I sound like Jimmy Buffett,
just because I've got that island beat.
Jimmy might have grown up on the ocean,
me I kind of grown up on the streets.
Music's just a way of life,
to me I'm living free.
So don't play all that Key West Jimmy Buffett s*** on me.

Now divers do it deeper,
must of really made them mad.
Some of them reviewers said,
it really sounded bad.
Well, they liked Margaritaville.
Me, I liked it too.
Someday, Jimmy,
why dont we just both get drunk and screw?

Them creepy motherfuckers,
that think music is a whore,
tell 'em that you just don't live in Key West anymore.

Theres sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore.
But Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters ??? ??? has a bumper sticker on the door,
Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.

Alright boys, sound like Jimmy Buffett now!

I'm listening to it now

spoken intro:
this song is for all the people that's been reviewing our records in different magazines and things
and mentioning the fact that we sound a lot like Jimmy Buffett because we live in Key West
and use conga drums in our songs.
and to all those people that are under the misconception that Mr Buffett lives in Key West.
We'd like to say that there is a lot of things in Key west.
As a matter of fact.........

There's sailboats, and conch shells, and palm trees galore
but Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key west anymore

Sister Spare Change has a bumper sticker on her door
It says Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore

Hey smugglers hate those buffett songs snitching on the sly
Bringing heat where it's already too damn hot to die
Son of a son of a son a b*tch what's all that bullsh*t for
Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore

Sailing to the caribbean Jimmy might well be
Picture's up in Rolling Stone for all then world to see
The rich keep getting richer the poor they just stay poor
Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore

Now Jimmy's moved to malibu with all those other stars
He not down on Duval Street hanging out in bars
All them god damn tourist got to be a bore
Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore

So don't go telling me I sound like Jimmy Buffett
just because I got that island beat
Jimmy might have grown up on the ocean
Me I kinda grown up on the street
Music's just a way of life to me I'm living free
So don't lay all that Key West Jimmy Buffett sh*t on me

Now divers do it deeper must've really made him mad
Some of them reviewers said it really sounded bad
Well they liked Margaritaville and me I like it too
Someday Jimmy why don't we just both get drunk and screw
All of them creepy mother f*ckers who think music is a whore
Tell em that you just don't live in Key West anymore

There's sailboats, conch shells, and palm trees galore

I'll trade you info. Can you get me Todd Snider's interview from 2000? explaining his departure from MCA/JB? I'll check my DAC folder and get back to ya'll.

I would like to know what the outcome of the lawsuit was...

He might not have a patent on all things Caribbean, but that jingle sure sounds EXACTLY the same.....

I would like to compare sheet music on that one :D

Looks like the lyrics answered my question. Regarding the Todd thing, I thought alaara answered that in the Snider thread?

The songs don't sound that much alike to me and I'm pretty sure Buffett lost the suit but don't hold me to it.

The song as a whole doesn't sound like Changes in Latitudes at all but the opening riff is Changes. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

just out of curiousity--what 'racist' records did DAC do? I'd never of heard that before..

by Jahfin
David Allan Coe's racist and pornographic records were never properly released due to their controversial content but you could obtain them through the black market back in the day. "Marijuanaville" is the same way (at least as far as I know), that's likely why Buffett hasn't pursued a lawsuit against the performers.

You can find out more about DAC's unofficially released albums by visiting his website. I'm not going to post the link here because the last thing I want to do is give the false impression that I'm endorsing them. I really don't have a problem with some of the pornographic stuff I've heard because I think it's humorous but I would never endorse his racist songs under any circumstances.
