Greatest Living Actor/Actress?

Post by CaptainP »

Who would you say is the greatest living actor or actress?

Please base your answer on their body of work, their versatility, respect amongst their peers, and/or awards won.
And anyone who says Paris Hilton should be banned from the internet.

I'm going to go with Morgan Freeman.

I know there are a lot of bigger names out there, but it seems that Freeman is seemingly in every movie that comes out, usually in a likeable role, and ALWAYS turns in a great performance. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him.

Try to list just one....

He's living, so he qualifies!
And he has a new movie, "Cars", on the way!
He's never stopped working, just slowed down a bit....6 movies since 1998.

"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

Depp or Vincent D'Onofrio.

and CP, I really had to break it out into age groups. I got to thinking about it when Brando died and they claimed he was the greatest actor in America at the time of his death. My thought was, "in his day, perhaps he was good, but he hasn't done crap since 1972...". Newman got the nod to that role because of a much better body of work over a much longer period of activity (even Mr. and Mrs. Bridge had good moments).

Hanks got the nod for his age group/bracket because of the back to back Oscars, and possible 3-peat in the 1990s, and his role as the father in "Road to Perdition". (Tho some of that could have been acting across from Newman... :D)

Johnny Depp and D'Onofrio both take roles that are interesting, and they become the role, a "Hi, I'm Hamlet and I look something like so-and-so" rather than "Hi, I'm so-and-so, love me in this because I am playing Hamlet" thing.

I have to go with Tom Hanks.
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.

Johnny Depp....he's had some great movies, where his character usually makes that movie good. His characters/movies have already covered a wide variety of styles. Depp's the man 8)

He was great in that. I think the best was "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", though. It can't be easy to play HST.
