What Was Your First Car?

Post by Virgin_(Island)_Girl »

I don't know if this has ever been done before, so disregard if it's repetitive...

But what was your first car? Share your stories here.

...back in my day, if I wanted a car, I had to be able to afford to buy, run and insure it myself. Therefore, my first was a cheap piece of junk.

Yes, a Chevy Vega! :o Not only did it drink oil like crazy, but the gas guage didn't work so I was always running out of gas! (yes for real  ) It's most endearing feature was the lighter that popped out all the way into the back seat, which caught various objects on fire on a few occasions! LOL

I only kept it for six months, but we had some funny times cruising in it for a bunch of teenagers...

1989 Toyota Tercel. Bought it 2 weeks before I got my license. Totalled it 3 weeks after. Took out a telephone pole and rolled it 3 times. The state trooper who responded couldn't even identify the make or model by what was left.

A 1974 Mustang II very similar to the one in the photo below except mine was grey (including the roof). I rode it into the ground to the point where I'm sure it's final resting place was at the local salvage yard. I'm forever grateful as it was a gift from my parents for my birthday that year but it was definitely a piece of junk. In retrospect, perfect for my first car. Nicknames: "grey ghost" and "cloud nine", the latter, thanks to my father who thought the car would have made a nice stand-in during a Cheech & Chong movie...

Its kind of a toss up, because I drove what was available.

1992 Honda Accord
1988 Mazada 626
~1990ish VW Vanagon

The Honda stayed out at my grandmothers. She actually bought it for me when I was too young to drive, so my parents made her keep it out there.

The Vanagon was what I learned to drive a manual transmission on.

The 626 was a hand me down when my folks bought a new car.

Hey Jah, that was my SECOND car!!!
Image

I'd go put two dollars of gas in it in the morning-it was just enough to drive me to school and get me home, as I recall

First car (sort of the parent's "extra" car) was the 1978 Honda CVCC wagon. That car could fly. Literally. 8)

My parents bought me a 1987 Buick Skyhawk in 1993 for my 16th birthday. Only am/fm in the thing... no cassette player. But it got me around and I got into a lot of trouble after getting that car! When I was 19, home from college on spring break, I drove it off the road a little by accident and blew out the right front tire. Had the tire repaired and headed off on a weekend road trip to visit some friends at another University. On my return, I was about 5-6 miles from home when I hit a pothole and my entire right front wheel came off! Evidently, when I ran off the road earlier in the week, the lugnuts were cracked and when I hit the pothole it caused the wheel to fall off. Never drove the Skyhawk again... :-?

My first car was a 84 Grand Marquis. Picked up that beauty for the rock bottom price of $500.00. What a steal for such a fine piece machinery. It ran so good, I only kept her for about a year. I name all of my cars and her name was Buttercup. She was a wonderful shade of yellowish and brown with nice hints of rust. AHHHHH, the memories.

1982 White Monte Carlo with T-Tops, maroon interior.
It was a lemon of a car but I drove it for 9+ years.

Before I say what my first car was you have to remember I got my driver's license in 1969. I had a 1963 Chevy Belair station wagon. It was the family car but my father got a company car so the beast was passed to me.

1988 Toyota Tercel. Red 2 door hatchback, with 5 speed manual transmission. It's life was tragically taken by a 1984 Ford F-150.

And if you have seen the size difference between the two you know it was not a fair fight. Somedays you are the windshield, somedays you are the bug. I miss that car.
Dumb and drunk as I was, you know I would do it all again.
