Le Tub in Davie on Atlantic Ave. Best burgers in the country. Great view of the water (the IntraCoastal) and if you are there at sunset, you can watch it over the lake.nutmeg wrote:Headed to Ft Lauderdale next month. Any suggestions???

Even in South Florida, where summer begins sometime around the end of March, the Fourth of July holiday marks a turning point of sorts. The seasonal visitors have left, the thermally challenged locals stay indoors and the beaches belong to the residents.
So here's a dining spot that, devoid of all pretense of fine dining, still offers the locals a tourist's feel for hitting the beach.
Tucked away in a mini-hammock along a busy stretch of A1A, Le Tub is right on the Intracoastal. Mostly open to the elements, the unfinished wood deck and booths fit right into a jungle setting. Le Tub started life as a gas station but the gas crunch of the 1970s forced its closing, after which it was purchased by Russell Kohuth, who took the barren property and constructed his beach shack totally from "flotsam, jetsam and ocean-borne treasures."
It may not be large, but Le Tub is a commodious establishment, with much of the decor furnished by bathroom fixtures. Toilet bowls have been turned into planters, outdoor lighting is supplied by bulbs enclosed in rusted tin cans and the atmosphere is pure castaway despite the sounds of traffic sailing by on both the road and the waterway.
There's nothing fancy about the menu, but it's good for what it is -- a bar with a kitchen and a grill. The smoked fish dip ($7) is good but made off-premises, but nearly everything else is made on the spot. The chili ($3) is moderately spiced, thick, very beefy in flavor and quite satisfying even on a hot day. Seafood salad ($8.50 or $14 depending on size) is cool and refreshing, with a sizable quantity of plump, well-cooked shrimp along with salmon chunks and pseudo-crabmeat.
The burger ($7.50, $8.50 with cheese) is one of the best in town. Made from ground sirloin, it's large and lean and redolent with chargrilled aroma and flavor. Burgers get short shrift from many foodies, but this one, complete with a poppy seed bun that has real flavor and texture, is worth a trip. The barbecued port sandwich ($7.50) is also very good, but the french fries are the sort bought frozen in bulk and predictably dull ($3.50).
Two other items deserve special mention -- Le Tub features fresh fish (market price) either as a grilled fillet platter ($16) or in a sandwich on that delectable bun ($8.50). It's usually worth trying, as is the homemade Key lime pie ($4) that is tangy and creamy without being overly sweet. Add in a good if not stellar selection of beer and decent service and this is an island getaway that (does)n't require you to be flush with cash.
Emphasis added, because they don't take plastic. Address: 1100 N. Ocean Drive, Hollywood

Deerfield Beach is north between FLL and West Palm Beach. In addition to Le Tub which is just off the airport grounds at FLL, there is also a good restaurant right on the water, near the pier at Atlantic Blvd. or at the Pompano Pier as well. (the guy playing there was peppering his set with about 1 Buffett song per 4-5 the night we were there).nutmeg wrote:Thanks! Hi! I'm back! Didn't get to visit any of the places you guys mentioned since we went straight to Deerfield Beach upon arriving so my hubby could get to his meetings. However I did find a little restaurant within walking distance of the hotel that I enjoyed. The Whales Rib. Great lobster salad sandwich.
Had a great time despite several disasters! The guy in the seat next to me got airsick and then passed out cold into my seat on the first flight. Luckily I had vacated the seat while he was ummm being airsick.
We arrived at the hotel to find a sign on the receptiond desk stating that ther pool was closing that day and would be closed for the rest of the week.
So much for my day dreams of reading a book by the pool with boat drink in hand.
They proceeded to use jackhammers all day every day we were there to take out the grout around the pool so that they could regrout it.
You could hear the jackhammer all the way down to the beach...but since it was windy and not very warm, I didn't spend much time there anyway.
Day two I got about an hour of beach time after the pea soup fog and before the rain started. I did walk to a little shopping area and did some retail therapy . And hubby took me to a bead store when he was done with meetings.
Day three dawned with no fog...but with high winds and really big waves. Not a day to sit on the beach (unless you needed your skin sandblasted)...however watching the surfers from the deck was great fun. Since parking is not plentiful, we walked a mile to a restaurant that evening...and got caught in a major downpour on our way back. We were laughing about looking like Dan Rather when he does his hurricane reports. Luckily we wore our Ireland rain coats...
Day four was our return day. We spent a lot of time in Chicago in the plane. First the plane was "overfueled" and they had to get the fueling guys to take some off...then it started snowing. We had to go back for de icing twice. We spent more time on the ground in Chicago than we did in the air for the trip back
Some good things about the trip. Ate some great food, saw surfers for the first time, saw a bi-plane fly over the beach on Tuesday and fantasized that it could be Jimmy, and witnessed a very heartwarming (if delayed) homecoming for a wounded soldier at our hometown airport. I can just imagine how anxiously those folks were waiting for over 3 hours for our plane to finally arrive. There were only about 10 people, but they had flags and banners and were so happy to see him. I got to speak to him briefly as we were leaving the plane and welcome him home as well...
Great to be back! I'd like to go again and have more time there and better weather!
