Former Creed frontman gets in tussle with L.A. rockers in Baltimore

Who's got his back?

At Baltimore's Harbor Court Hotel on Thanksgiving night, members of Los Angeles rockers 311, on a day off from their national tour, got into a fist fight with former Creed frontman Scott Stapp, in town to promote his solo debut, The Great Divide. 311 singer S.A. Martinez suffered a fractured knuckle as a result of the brawl, which the band says Stapp started.

"We had just finished dinner and were at the hotel bar to watch the Lakers game when Scott Stapp walked in being very loud and obnoxious," Martinez tells Rolling Stone. "In fact, one of the first things he said was that he loved to fight. So he started doing shots and breaking the glass on the bar, almost hitting one of our crew guys. My wife and I moved to a table and eventually Scott made his way over and sat down. He was looking for attention. Even before that, he had wadded up a napkin that he lobbed in our direction. It was pathetic, and we tried to ignore him, but it was impossible. Then he made a pretty disrespectful comment to my wife, which I'd rather not repeat, but in no uncertain terms, the word '*****' was used. That's when [drummer] Chad [Sexton] walked over."

"I had run into Scott that day," says Sexton. "We have some things in common, like the same producer, and we chatted for a few minutes. So knowing we got along earlier, I kindly asked him not to disrespect anybody and reminded him that we're all friends. That's when he sucker-punched me -- hit me right in the face."

"When Scott punched Chad," adds Martinez, "in the follow-through, he hit my wife so then I threw my punch. I think the last time I got into a fight was in the third grade, but it was an instant reaction on my part. [311 bassist] P-Nut also came over and he got sucked into it, opening up a scar on his right arm from a recent surgery. Scott went down, and his girl came over and sat on him to get him to stop, but he got up, enraged, still wanting to fight. After about five minutes, hotel security finally broke it up and kicked him out. Honestly, the hotel was really at fault for not kicking him out when he threw the first shot glass."

Later that night, Martinez went to a local hospital to treat what's called a "boxer's fracture." His right hand is now in a cast, but he was able to perform the following day in Baltimore. "It was different, because I'm used to holding the mike in that hand," he says. "Thankfully, I can still bust a move."

Ironically, before the situation escalated, Stapp had told the members of 311 that he was a fan, according to Martinez. "He was telling us how he'd been to a show of ours in Florida, where he got up on stage, and that he was so thankful that we didn't kick him off," says the singer. "He was saying, 'You had no idea that you guys being so cool to me would inspire me to start a band, and for me to sell 30 million records, win a Grammy, VMAs, Billboard Awards . . .' He just went on and on, like some drunk guy who wouldn't shut the ***** up, while we just wanted to watch the game."

In the end, 311 insist they were acting in self-defense and, according to Sexton, have gone public as a response to rumors to "tell what really happened that so there's no misinformation out there . . . We're very positive people. We've preached positivity on every record we've made. We don't have altercations like this ever. And we even wish Scott well."

For Stapp, this is not the first such incident. In April of 2001, while a member of Creed, he was involved in a bar brawl in St. Augustine, Florida. Witnesses told Rolling Stone at the time that Stapp threw a punch at a man who had taunted him.

When contacted by Rolling Stone, Stapp's representative had no comment on the Baltimore altercation. And according to the Baltimore police department, no charges have been filed.

From todays NY Daily News - same guy, different incident.
http://nydailynews.com/front/story/370687p-315063c.html

As TV guest, cross Stapp is hellish

Maybe rocker Scott Stapp - former front man for the very pious Christian rock band Creed - was possessed by Satan when he showed up for a taping of the Spike TV show "Casino Cinema" on Tuesday afternoon.

According to multiple sources on the set, the 32-year-old Stapp appeared intoxicated when he arrived at the show's upper East Side studio and proceeded to terrorize hosts Beth Ostrosky and Steve Schirripa, the producers and the crew members alike with his boorish and vulgar antics on- and off-camera.

Stapp - who just released his first solo album, "The Great Divide" - was there as a guest co-host on the weekly program, which plays a movie with intermittent breaks of studio chatter and interactive casino games.

"From the moment he walked into the studio, he was rude, belligerent and drunk," reports a Lowdown spy. "With Beth, he was nothing but extremely mean, sexist and an all-around jerk."

Another source says that even with his publicist in tow, Stapp cursed "every other word," called a female executive producer a "b-," constantly flipped the bird, and referred to Ostrosky - better known as Howard Stern's longtime girlfriend - as a "bimbo."

Stapp also couldn't resist taking swipes at his more famous rock colleagues. "I met [U2's] Bono and The Edge, and Bono was an a- to me," he declared, before insulting Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl's manhood as "freaking little."

When a crew member accidently bumped into him on the set and quickly said he was sorry, Stapp snapped, "Yeah, you better f-ing be."

Says one spy, "Beth and Steve were total professionals about it, and did everything to make sure the show got taped."

Reps for Stapp and Ostrosky did not respond to detailed messages yesterday, but viewers can see Stapp's bad behavior for themselves - with appropriate bleeps, of course - when the show airs Dec. 6.

I think that was the band's gimmick to get some notoriety when they first broke...

A couple years back he (Creed) did a live show in Chicago where he was wasted and a total jerk. From everything I heard it was beyond pathetic and an absolutely terrible show; I don't even know if they got through half the set...people were outraged and some even sued to get their money back. I'm not a bit one for law suits, but it sounded like this was probably justified. Seems his behavior is no better and he's just a waste.

Stapp Addresses Thanksgiving Spat

311's Sexton Stands By Initial Statement

Image

Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.

Two weeks after the incident, Scott Stapp has publicly weighed in on a Thanksgiving altercation between the former Creed singer and members of the band 311. As previously reported, the two acts encountered one another in the bar at Baltimore, Md.'s Harbor Court Hotel.

On its official Web site, 311 last week alleged Stapp was intoxicated, destructive and made inappropriate comments to a bandmember's wife, which led to a scuffle.

"This is a very unfortunate situation; however, there are two sides to every story," Stapp says in his statement, issued last night (Dec. 7), nearly a week after Billboard.com requested comment about the incident. "I was at the hotel celebrating Thanksgiving and my engagement with my new fiancée when the fight started. As the Associated Press reported and confirmed, I did not instigate this altercation."

The AP report to which he is referring quotes the hotel's director of security as saying, "[The fight] was definitely started by 311."

"I spoke with the front desk of the hotel and they confirmed that Scott was not at fault," Stapp tour manager Rob Kern adds in the statement.

"We stand by our initial statement 100%," 311's Chad Sexton says in a statement issued today through the band's label, Jive Records. "With complete certainty I can tell you that Scott Stapp was acting totally belligerent, he smashed a shot glass on the bar, he got into an argument with patrons at the bar, he made a disrespectful remark to [311 member SA Martinez's] wife and he threw the first punch which started the fight.

"Scott can say whatever he wants -- but that's what happened."

Scott Stapp Calls Thanksgiving Brawl Story A Load Of Turkey

Ex-Creed singer says 311 attacked him, not the other way around.

by James Montgomery
For almost a week, Scott Stapp has suffered a public-relations beatdown stemming from reports of a Thanksgiving-night fracas in a Baltimore hotel between him and members of 311. Now he's firing back.

On Wednesday (December 7), Stapp released a statement refuting claims made by 311 that he started the brawl (see " 'Out Of Control' Scott Stapp Incites Melee With 311 At Baltimore Hotel"), and pointed to an Associated Press report that he said places the blame squarely on 311's collective shoulders.

"This is a very unfortunate situation; however, there are two sides to every story. I was at the hotel celebrating Thanksgiving and my engagement with my new fiancee when the fight started," the statement read. "As The Associated Press reported and confirmed, I did not instigate this altercation."

The statement refers to a December 2 AP story that quotes Jonathan Jordan, director of security at the Harbor Court Hotel, as saying the fight "was definitely started by 311."

Stapp's tour manager, Rob Kern, is also quoted in the statement, saying that he spoke to the front-desk manager at the hotel and "they confirmed that Scott was not at fault."

When MTV News originally reported the story on December 1, a spokesperson for the hotel had no comment on the fight.

In their own statement Wednesday, 311's Chad Sexton responded to Stapp's claims by saying: "We stand by our initial statement 100 percent. With complete certainty I can tell you that Scott Stapp was acting totally belligerent, he smashed a shot glass on the bar, he got into an argument with patrons at the bar, he made a disrespectful remark to [Doug 'SA' Martinez]'s wife, and he threw the first punch which started the fight. Scott can say whatever he wants, but that's what happened."
