a couple alot of people knew faked the death of the wife and two children in an auto accident. Apparently people had met this couple, im'd emailed, exchanged gifts and cards, etc. Then one day they husband said his wife and twins were killed in an auto accident. He described details. People shed tears, probably sent cards, said prayers etc. It took close to a week for the hoax to be discovered. I didn't know these people but, wow.

Was there some point as to why he did that other than attention maybe?

not that i can really see. I'm assuming it was attention. I don't know. I don't know if initially the wife knew or not. Perhaps he wanted his internet freedom so to speak.
