here's my two cents: i went to the la concha last year about this time for my birthday...we flew directly into key west and after a 12 minute taxi ride we were at the hotel. great location if you want to be in the thick of things, but if you do go there, request a room on the pool side, on the road is a little noisy. they had a real nice staff and have completely re-done their pool area.

2 months later i went to ft. lauderdale and drove down for a day. the 5 hours each way was tiring.

whatever you do if it is a cost isue, compare the cost of a direct flight with the cost of renting and driving a car. my guess is the direct will be much cheaper.

another option people on this board gave me was to stay in a bed & breakfast in key west. to save money on drinks i was told most of them have happy hours nightly with hors d-oevres and drinks, which can save money in restaurants and bars later.

again, just my 2 cents. more than happy to answer whatever i can so if you want email me

oh one more very important thing! If you go don't forget the got to Irish Kevins. It is right next to Sloppy Joes. It was a blast and if you go eitehr before 8 or 10 not so sure all ages are allowed in and they have this guy playing guitar named Solinski or something who was so funny and great entertainment. It is a must stop to get out of the heat.

Either way you should have a hoot in KW and dont take it to secrious.

Irish Kevin's was by far my favorite spot in Key West. I saw John Solinski 5 days in a row...he got a kick out of us coming in so often. The last day, he bought our drinks for us, but it did mean he picked on us quite a bit. On more than a few occasions, we were singing solo to the bar  That's one hilarious and entertaining guy. 8)

I agree, that was the best bar we went to in KW and tell everyone to make sure thye at least stop in to see John. Maybe cause the drunk guy sitting next to us dropped his buddys digital camera in his beer. I didn't think that cameras float. Except his buddy was not too thrilled to drain the beer from his sony.

the only bad part of Irish Kevin's is the $35 minimum to use a credit card.
