I Do Not Want To Talk About Mings

Post by Cubbie Bear »

No offense, little buddy. Give it a rest

Please feel free to talk about any other topic here.

I'll start.....

If SNL has supposedly s*cked since the original cast members left, how come 76 of the 100 greatest mements were other people? Farley, Crystal, Murphy, Sandler, Spade........

Perhaps the panel of judges used to decide the top 100 moments were of a different generation than that of the original cast thus the results we bias based on the footage the judges had grown up with.

I don't want to talk about Mings either. He's a schmuck.

I think I gotta say that the late 80's early 90's were the the best.

Could at least partly be because the original cast wasn't around for that long. I think Chevy Chase left after the 1st season or maybe in the 2nd. Ackroyd and Belushi left after the 4th season and the rest of the originals were done after season 5. And even though (IMHO) the overall comedic quality of the show declined after the originals left, there were still some singularly outstanding moments from those you mentioned (and others - Dennis Miller, Joe Piscapo, Phil Hartman).

Chase bailed after the first season. Bill Murray came in after that. Hartman and Miller I would agree with, Piscapo really never seemed that funny. Murphy, sure, but talk about a complete waste of talent in the last 20 years. Sandler I've never really found funny, and Spade is just a one-trick pony. Will Farrell on the other hand, seriously one of the best alumni out of the last 15 years.

Crystal and Martin Short already had pretty good careers going before they were brought in to revive the show after the second squad almost killed it off.

Dana Carvey could be added to that list just for Church Lady and of course combined with Mike Myers for Wayne's World.

Chris Farley wasn't funny at all. If he wasn't a fat slob his career would have lasted about 5 minutes.

I don't get Adam Sandler, I think he's stupid, not funny. Must be a generation thing.

I thought David Spade was funny the first time I saw him but his schtick got old real fast.

I quit watching snl years ago, but I saw the greatest moments show. It was pretty funny at times.
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.

I think the comedy has changed with the times.... as have the players who make up the cast. Evidently SNL has offered something to everyone over the past however many years.... I personally prefer just the early days. Those actors just made it look so effortless.

I am sorry Larry but I am going have to disagree with you about Farley.
One of my favorite characters was the motivation speaker that Farley played. I still laugh every time I hear “ I live in van down by the river” but then again it is my own opinion.

That is also one of my favorites. The skit he did as Tom Arnold during the SNL Update was also hilarious. That said, he was no John Belushi.

I guess because of nostalgia people tend to remember the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players as the best and in lot of ways they were (I don't think you could get away with some of the stuff they did back then on TV nowadays) but they also had their low points. There's been several strong ensembles on the show since then (as well as plenty of weak ones) but it seems now that as soon as they start to gel the stars are picked up to do movies and they never really have the chance to take their talents to the next level.

I don't get to watch SNL often, but one of the lead-off skits a few weeks ago was about getting "Butt Cancer."

I laughed for a looonnnnnggggg time.

That's all.

And so began the problems between the two. I have no idea what was said or done, but I remember seeing the "Behind the Scenes - Caddyshack". The two apparently had not gotten along well and Caddyshack was the first time they were put back together. Almost all of the scenes were shot before they filmed any scene that had them in it together... just in case.

It might have something to do with those comedians were pulled out of no where and I think most of them were just happy to have a steady job. Now it has become its own corporate entity. Did you know that SNL holds the exclusive rights to every character created on the show? I heard Will Ferrell talking about it recently in an interview. He doesn't even get a cut of the "Best of" DVDs.

I agree with Larry about Adam Sandler. It IS a generational thing, my son LOVES Adam Sandler.
But that motivational speaker, 'van down by the river' thing.....FUNNY!!!

Chase thought he was the creative engine behind it all; his leaving after the first year was his way of saying, "I don't need you people", is one version I have heard. Murray came off as a hotdog, but if you look at his credentials vs. Chase's, as well as their careers after leaving SNL, Murray wins in every category other than "biggest jerk"

I agree, and the Chris Farley Show... where he'd say "Remember (like to Paul McCartney) the Beatles, yea, that was cool...."
