i actually saw Capote today. I vividly remember watching Trumamn Capote on the Tonight Show, and recently saw a clip of him on Dick Cavett which helped refresh me on his voice and mannerisms. Philip Seymour Hoffman does an amazing job in this movie and I highly recommend it. I also now need to go back and reread In Cold Blood.OceanCityGirl wrote:i actually do want to see Capote though.

If you're old enough to remember Truman Capote, you'll probably agreeejr wrote:i actually saw Capote today. that Hoffmann NAILS this portrayal. I think he's a shoo-in, right now, for the Golden Globe and Oscar.

I remember seeing Capote on the Tonight Show, also, but never read In Cold Blood. (and I read a lot) I know it's a well known book, but is worth reading?ejr wrote: i actually saw Capote today. I'd like to see the movie Capote, but not too sure about the other one...
There's not much publicity about it out here in the middle of nowhere.
He sure does! And while he does not look that much like Capotte, there are a couple of camera angles where he could easily be mistaken for him. I have always thought Hoffman was a terrific, and underrated actor.Lightning Bolt wrote:If you're old enough to remember Truman Capote, you'll probably agreeejr wrote:i actually saw Capote today. The book actually changed the whole genre of nonfiction---this was really the first book of its kind. I remember it getting astonishing reviews.maggiemay56 wrote:I remember seeing Capote on the Tonight Show, also, but never read In Cold Blood. As for Brokeback Mountain---it got a lot of Golden Globe nominations, the acting and cinematography are supposed to be terrific, and it is supposed to be a wonderful movie, so despite the discomfort that some might have with it, I would keep an open mind, and give it a chance.

Well, and maybe I was taking the quote to literally, but to me that implies that the majority of men that go fishing for the weekend are secretly thinkin' about having sex with they're buddies. No?Lightning Bolt wrote:Where do you come from with that?st.somewhere wrote:No offense, but "<b>Are you insane"</b>?MelliJellyBean wrote:I think it's a more true-to-life story than most people (guys) would want to admit.

I didn't think that was what MJB was implying... I took it to mean that there are probably lots of gay persons THROUGHOUT America, not just in big cities, or on the coasts.
Either way, I'm not gonna wake up tomorrow and say, "Maybe I'll check out that cowboy flick where they tell their wives they're goin' fishin', but have sex instead!"

The movie got the most Golden Globe nominations.

People I know who have seen it said it's good, but difficult. They say the actors mumble a lot and the plot moves very, very slowly.
I love the director, Ang Lee (SENSE AND SENSIBILITY and THE ICE STORM). Don't know much about the actors, but I want to see it. It's not at the top of my list.
However, Mr. Mojito and I are planning to drive into Dallas to see CAPOTE. I've read everything he wrote...IN COLD BLOOD came out when I in high school. I studied Capote in college...Mr. Mojito uses several of his stories to teach writing.....and I hear Philip Seymour Hoffman really captured Capote's essence.

Nope not going to see it. Not because it is about homosexuality, it is just not my kind of movie. Even if it were about a straight couple, I would not have or make any plans to see it. It sounds like a "chick flick" and judging from the women that said they would see it, that sounds like an apt description of it.
As for the reviews of any movie ...I make up my own mind about the movie, as generally, it seems like the reviewers have an axe to grind or else over rate it, but occasionally they get it right. A lot of movies they trash turn out to be money makers.
I haven't heard about the Capote movie, I might consider seeing it...I remember him on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Is "In Cold Blood" worth reading? I would highly reccomend it, but then again it depends on your reading taste.

ummm -i know alot of Generation X-ers and younger who swing both ways or have had at least one encounter...and they don't like to admit to it. I personally know several 'straight' men who had a sexual experience with the same sex...but still claim they aren't gay or whatever. I don't understand it, that's for sure, but it happens.

No way! Previews looked totally silly. If it was realistic, the gay cowboys would have been more crude like the rednecks in Deliverance than sweet sensitive cowboys... Seems like in that day and age they would have chosen another career, like booksellers or grocers.
Larry Munson was yakking about that movie this morning... He's an 80-year-old syndicated radio commentator...used to do sports, now he takes eight college-age students to the movies for reviews. He said all the girls wanted to see this movie, and said if he makes them see King Kong, he has to take them to this gay cowboy movie. He sounded so uncomfortable talking about it, it was funny.

It was the same way when I was in college in the 70s, what a shock, but people didn't admit it then either.MelliJellyBean wrote:ummm -i know alot of Generation X-ers and younger who swing both ways or have had at least one encounter...and they don't like to admit to it. The reason I asked if it was worth reading is all I can remember of Capote IS seeing him on the Tonight Show. I wasn't sure whether the book was really good, or just controversial for it's time.Sam wrote:

That's actually what I thought the OP was saying here too. I chuckled at it. I figure there are some guys that hide there sexuality but I doubted that most guys secretly want to get with their buddies.st.somewhere wrote:Well, and maybe I was taking the quote to literally, but to me that implies that the majority of men that go fishing for the weekend are secretly thinkin' about having sex with they're buddies. THE ICE STORM was an extremely interesting movie.. I'd like to see it again. IN COLD BLOOD happened in Kansas and I lived about 100 miles South of there..it was kinda eerie to think of something like that happening so close to where I lived..East Texas Parrothead wrote:The movie got the most Golden Globe nominations.

CAPOTE was a staple on the Tonight Show..and Studio 54...he really enjoyed everything that went on there..one of his best buddies was Mick's wife, at the time, Bianca Jagger... he seemed to be held in highest esteem in the literary world though.

When it goes from full to crescent...I move in and out of tune...Everlasting Moon....
