Has anyone ever been? I'm having trouble getting a flavor of the island from the web. Thinking of a 5 night stay the end of January.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Not related to Martinique in particular, but one thing I've found from research is that the flight seems to be the most costly part of a Caribbean vacation. You can get decent deals on all-inclusive resorts or villas...but the flight is a killer

I have been twice but both times were by way of a cruise ship. If I remember correctly the island is divided into two distinct sections, French and Dutch. The french side was interesting but I enjoyed the dutch side more. The extent of my exploration of the island was sitting in a dutch cafe drinking beer all day, I think I was sunburnt and wore out from the previous island. I was only there for the day and dont know what the night life is like, but I had a great time on Barbados, nice people and great bear (Banks)! Enjoy your trip!

I think your thinking of St Maarten/St Martin.. which is beautiful and a great island for a 5 day stay!
