son broke hand will miss winter track season

Post by OceanCityGirl »

my son was home for college break one day. He got up to go to a bunch of skateboard parks at 6am. Went to 3 parks in 3 hours, walked up the boardwalk to check the waves, went down the steps hit icy patch. Fell hit head, back and hand. He has at least a broken scaphoid and maybe some other smaller breaks. Right now he's in a full arm cast including thumb. He's in alot of pain and no meds are working. He probably is going to get surgery, broken scaphoid is hard to heal.
This kid runs 85 miles pw plus does tons of crazy stuff but broke his hand going down steps. He won't be allowed to compete til the cast is off. He can't run til they shorten the cast a bit. He worked really hard to get his mileage up for a good winter/spring season. So right now he's crushed. He'll definitely red shirt thru the winter season and hopefully it will be ok for spring. I don't really know how to deal with a depressed/crushed 18yo. Any tips?

I found out that what the runners did with my son on recruitment weekend was to take him to a Victoria's Secret Fashion show.

Through H.S. and college my Keet had 3 stress fractures in 4 years. It is a tough situation to cope with! She was able to do stationary bike and pool running (you need the right equipment to make it work). Perhaps with a "cast condom" he can get some aqua-running in.
How did the first XC season go?

Kind of reminds me of my senior year. I had beeen an (below) average quarter miler for my sophemore and junior years and decided the summer before senior year that I was not going to be bad any more. Worked my tail off, running distance, speed work and running hills. I was running times in practice almost 8 seconds better than my previous best.

The day before the first indoor meet of the season, The Oak Park Relays, a very prestgious meet in Chicago area, I had a brain fart. I was cutting through the gym on my way to go home and a bunch of guys were playing pick-up basketball. #1 Track team rule. NO BASKETBALL. So of course I joined in. I went up for a rebound and came down on someones foot and tore up my ankle so bad I was on cruches over 6 weeks. 30 years later it still gives me fits.

Keep an eye on your son. This is when I kind of fell off the deep end and went from "Track Fag" to partier full time. You are feeling sorry for yourself and it is an easy hole to fall into.

He had 2 stress fractures during hs so he knows about training thru it. If he doesn't need surgery in another week the dr will put on a water proof cast.

That's what i'm worried about. Esp. with all his college and lifeguard friends home for the break. The dr said he can run with the cast but he's in pain, feeling down and knows it will be hard. He hasn't run since Thurs. I'm going to push him into doing something after the check up today.
"Track Fag", that's funny. There are two very competitive hs's here, my son was on one. That's what they referred to the guys on the other teams as because they wore running shoes everywhere and their school shirts/uniforms.

i also worry about depression. He gets depressed when he can't run/compete. He's a bit ADD and running has helped him to control it and be better focused. No matter how much pool running and biking he does it's just not the same thing.

My son, too. I would have never ever though one of my kids would be interested (I was never a speedster) . But my son is a sophomore in high school, and does the whole X-Country, and winter and spring track. The Team-but-still-an-individual that track provides is great for him.

But, he has never sufferd an injury that has put him on the sidelines. He hates it when he misses practice, don't know how he would deal with it.

that's the best part of xc. You can advance to states on your own even if your team doesn't. The guys have great times too. Pasta dinners, breakfast after practice, etc. My son is still very close to all his hs running buddies.

A couple of us quit football after freshman year and when we wouldn't rejoin, we were stuck with that name and wore it proudly.
