David Lee Roth Goes Bluegrass

He's added his voice to bluegrass versions of Van Halen classics on a new LP.
Saturday, December 17, 2005
Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth is revisiting his greatest hits on a new bluegrass tribute album.

The rocker has added his voice to bluegrass versions of Van Halen classics "Jump" and "Jamie's Cryin'" on the quirky new album "Strummin' With The Devil."

The album, set to hit stores next spring, is the latest in a long line of bluegrass tribute albums released by CMH Records.

Other rock bands given the bluegrass treatment include The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith

Ok, I've heard Fade to Bluegrass, a tribute to Metallica and the Hayseed Dixie AC/DC tribute stuff, but those are done by true Bluegrass bands. They're both really cool and worth a listen.

But I don't know about this one. Who is doing this with him? Just DLR himself or with people who know what they're doing?

Things that make you go hmmmm.

Most of those kind of bluegrass tribute albums s*** tremendously, especially the ones in the Pickin' On... series. I imagine this one will be no exception.

Yep, I agree. I bought a Buffett bluegrass tribute CD. I couldn't make it through an entire song. Kept skipping to the next one hoping it'd be better. Nope, it all sucked. At least they're consistent...

Course, the Hayseed Dixie tribute CD's are always really good.

Wish I could say the same but it doesn't usually take too long for the novelty of those discs to wear thin with me. I much prefer The Gourds' take on Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Gin n' Juice" and Luther Wright and the Wrong's bluegrass/country treatment of Pink Floyd's The Wall called Rebuild the Wall.
