There's a great little local joint on A1A called Pomars with one of the best Cheesburgers I've ever had. Right next to it is a nice place called the South Beach Grille with some great seafood.
I've been slightly disappointed with South Beach Grille, but the location and view is awesome! It's still worth the trip. I'll have to try Pomars though 8)

Richard (or anyone not familiar with St. Aug), do NOT go to Santa Maria on Matanzas Bay  Instead, go to neighbors O.C. Whites or A1A 8)
I haven't been to Pomars either, but I'll try it soon! I have to agree South beach isn't good, my only experience was seeing my wife nearly vomit when she found a deep fried roach in her fried green tomato's. :x Also agree with the Santa Maria comment, tourist trap dive. A1A,OC Whites, Columbia, even Florida Cracker is good. Oasis, on the way to CB is one of my favorites we go almost every weekend for a grilled grouper sandwich.

South Beach Grille has the best fried shrimp that I've had around here.
That's all I've really had from there so maybe my "great seafood" comment was a little off.
I did not know that they served fried roaches. I'll have to try that

The Conch House Lounge is good but I hear it's going out of business.
I used to love going there for live music and drinks.
I used to go to the Sunset Grille on A1A a lot but got kicked out during a hurricane party a few years back and have not went back since.

Edisto is great. I have a house there and have been going my whole life. Shrimping and crabing are still excellent. If you go, you must go to botany bay. It is a deserted idland just north of Edisto. They way you get there is to go down botany bay road (a long windy sand road) that ends in a guys house with a boat ramp in the creek. You pay him 5 bucks and put your boat in, or he will take you in his boat if you don't have one. The island is just up the creek a mile or so and has miles of unspoiled beaches. I can't believe I am giving this secret away so do your self a favor and don't miss it!

Also, Beaufort, is a very nice town. Very simmilar to St. Augistine. but with a somewhat smaller, less touristy feel. Good luck.

Conch House is good....interesting place, a tad expensive. WIth the location being hidden, I'm not surprised they'd go out of business. I never did get to sit up in a hut though :x

I saw a new report that the owner has sold it and a big parcel of land to some investors, who are going to build condos and shpping, He did say that under the new ownership, the Conch House will stay. But I agree, too expensive

St Georges Island, FL. Between Tallahassee and Pensacola on the panhandle. Very much off the beaten path, vacation rental houses only-no hotels on the island. Some of the best natural beaches in FL. I have to agree with Des and vote for St.Augustine too!

Murrells Inlet, just south of myrtle beach about 25 minutes. Great seafood, music, and local bars. Plus Cheesburger in Paradise and Margaritaville are both within 30 minutes in Myrtle Beach. Garden City Beach is a great beach without all of the tourists. Also close to Litchfield Beach and Pawleys Island.

I guess I should update since we reserved our house. We narrowed it down to St. Augustine and Edisto and ended up getting a place in Edisto. I am excited to show all of my new Indiana friends how to crab. Oh, and I will have to look into Botany Bay. Thanks for the tip!

speaking of expensive.....I recently had my 3rd wedding anniversary and not wanting to take to much time off from work, we spent a few days at Casa De La Paz (fancy B&B right on the bay between the Bridge of Lions and the Castillo). Great place, I'd highly recommend it for a short stay....anyway, we took some recommendations and ate dinner at some fancy french continental place...La Pasiananna or something like that. It was V-day, so they had a "special" menu they didn't tell us about when making reservations. 1 menu only, 6 course meal, $65 a person. I'm not a fancy "caviar and snail" type person, so I was a bit dissapointed with some of the food....but the wife wanted the experience, so we took our table anyway. With an overall bill of $200, the only 2 courses of the 6 I enjoyed was the Filet and Lobster tail and the Chocolate Mousse....but I've never paid $200 for dinner before (and this was with me not drinking and the wife just had 1 glass of wine). Oh well, we didn't get all dressed up for nothing

I'm so glad you decided on Edisto....Spent many many days there , having grown up in Charleston..the last time I was there , my girlfriend from Virginia rented a house there for a week and I went up for 3 days...Chrissy brought her little boat down from Beaufort and we spent all 3 days on the water, crabbing and fishing...Caught the biggest, best tasting crabs I have ever eaten...all just sitting on the boat, with a string, chicken back (or neck) and a dip net.....

Wonderful days....

Enjoy your trip!

Another fan of SGI and Apalachicola. Great beaches, fishing, and just a great place for kicking back and goofing off.

It is but plans are well underway to transform it into a retirement community (see below). What used to be a popular hotspot in the 60s, 70s and 80s has practically been shutdown in recent years by the city fathers. Last year all of the amusement rides were removed from The Circle to make way for the upcoming construction. In the same area, several long standing fishing piers are also being demolished so condos can go up in their place. The face of the Crystal Coast is changing and it's not for the good.

Here too Jah...

It used to be a great little town...wonderful place to live...

But now...well..I've seen the plans..and the growth...and it ain't pretty.

Welcome to the new Hilton Head..

Condo's going in on the river downtown...going to do a River Walk to try and look like Savannah....yet another golf course....and across the bridge is no longer Yulee...

It's now "The Mainland"..

Time to start looking......really.

At least it's not turning into a tacky tourist area such as Myrtle Beach with an Eagles and Wings on every corner. Well, most of the area anyhow since AB has it's fair share of those type of stores geared strictly towards tourists. I'm headed elsewhere as well but not because of the gentrification of the area, one too many hurricanes have amounted to the straw that broke the camel's back. One can only rebuild so many times before enough is enough. I hate like hell to leave the coast but I've been left little choice.
