Mother's Finest

Post by diamonddan »

Anybody ever heard of them? Back in my high school days (Late 70's) Their Album, ANOTHER MOTHER FURTHER, was a "must have" in my town, up there with BOSTON and KC and The Sunshine Band (and of course, Jimmy B). Hard to discribe their sound, sorta a Rock-Funk-Disco combo.

Anyway, they will be in the Carolinas the next few weeks. I have never seen them live, wondering if anyone has and if they are still as good as they were back then.

I was a huge fan of theirs back in the day and used to see them on fairly regular basis. They were definitely one of the best live bands on the circuit back then. That said, I would never even mention them in the same breath as Boston or KC and the Sunshine Band. More like Led Zeppelin and Sly and the Family Stone as they were among the very first to merge funk and hard rock. In fact, they were once heralded as "the black Led Zeppelin". That may be a bit of a stretch but one thing is for sure, they were light years ahead of their time as far as mixing genres like they did. In fact, they even came out with an album a few years back called Black Radio Will Not Play This Record.

I haven't seen the latest incarnation of Mother's Finest but according to their web site there are a lot of original members onboard for this tour. If they are anything like they used to be live, you are in for one big ass kickin' show. Few bands know how to rock and work a crowd like Baby Jean Kennedy.

saw them many time growing up in SC in the 70's. Their first 2 Epic CD's, Mother's Finest & Another Mother Further were really good. Rain, Mickey's Monkey, Thank You For The Love, Fire were all great tunes.

The first time I saw them they were opening up for ZZ Top and after the show no one was talking about ZZ Top. Everyone went out and bought that first LP the next week.

I see them once or twice a year. They play extensively in Germany and other parts of Europe. Where near you are they playing? I will see them in Columbia at Headliners. Just a great band! When you see "Mo"playing guitar and "REALLY" getting down you will understand.

I love Mother's Finest...saw them quite a few times over the years in Charlotte and in Myrtle Beach! I always enjoyed the high energy they put into a show. I couldn't make the recent Charlotte show...glad they are still out there and touring!!!
