Rock legends David Bowie and Cream, country icon Merle Haggard and late comedy innovator Richard Pryor are among the recipients of the 2006 Grammy Lifetime Achievement awards, which will be formally acknowledged Feb. 7 and then presented the next evening during the live Grammy telecast on CBS.

Additional Lifetime Achievement honors will be given to late blues legend Robert Johnson, opera vocalist Jessye Norman and preeminent folk quartet the Weavers.

Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, late country producer Owen Bradley and recording engineer Al Schmitt will receive the Grammy Trustees Award, while Technical Grammys will be presented to the late Tom Dowd as well as Bell Labs and Western Electric.

As previously reported, Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West lead the Grammy field with eight nominations apiece.

I am too but given their history of things like this it always seems like too little too late. Last year they finally got around to acknowledging the influence of Southern Rock and lauding Led Zeppelin with a Lifetime Achievement Award and those are only two examples. They have lots more oversights to make up for but at least they're doing something.
