Any of the upscale chains are very nice and a safe bet. Or look into the sunset key cottages (I think the ferry runs 24 hours). The reach is walkable, but not a lot: I'd say 20 minutes or so through the gay part of town (always makes my SO nervous) and we go at a pretty decent clip.
I'd say not to even waste your energy or money on a car.

Sunset Key? at $500/night or more, yes, they should be nice...

500.00? Try 1000.00 a night in March. Cottages are nice and are quiet but don't expect 5 star service to go with the 5 star price....been there, done that.

yeah, it's enjoyable for something different. Personally, we either stay at NAS key west or la concha ... we don't do fancy, we do stumbling distance (or in the case of NAS key west during fantasy fest, the fact that 3-bedroom condos are $40, with kitchens)

Done that before (when JB played Wickham Field). Cops didn't roust us until daybreak.
But now Mrs. Y-NO demands the Pier House. OK, she prefers it (I demand it).

The Reach also is within walking distance of the southernmost point as well.
So this sounds like a decent choice! How far of a walk is to the bars? Can you stumble your way back or take a taxi? Were thinkin of gettin a car but dont need a dwi.
#1 - You do not need a car if you're planning on staying in Old Town. There's
next to no reason to go far unless you just hanker to go to another Key for
some reason.
#2 - Even if you want to pick up "groceries" to stock your room with snacks,
or just have to eat in New Town, Key West is only 2X4 miles large, so a cab
will do. Map: http://www.phip.com/MOTM/Map.gif
#3 - I'm a fat old lady with a limp, and I don't understand why people think
they can't walk from one end of Duval to the other and back. I did it
multiple times just 2 months ago.
#4 - I'm sure your wife, as an "uptown girl", would enjoy either the Casa or
the Reach. The Casa is larger, but a tiny bit farther from Duval Street.
It definitely has the "great KW vibe but has a little luxury as well."

We're staying at either Ocean Key House or the Galleon next January.

Last May we stayed at the Pegasus on Duval- it's the purple and white hotel....we drove down on a wim from Lauderdale and didn't have a hotel until we stopped to fill up the car on one of the keys and picked up one of those tourist coupon books...we ended up getting a room for around $100. Nothing special, but it's got a pool and the location is great.
Not bad considering the first time we were there we spent $250 at the Travelodge that was nowhere near walking distance!

I've stayed at the Pier House several times. Great location. Great for late nights at the Chart House and late night drunken hot tub/pool/gulf swim. Last couple times we've stayed at the Hyatt. Nicer rooms, grounds not as lush as the Pier House. Both are in great location-right at the foot of Duval St.
