A source of inspiration for M'ville: Puerto Morelos?
Maybe this one's been done before, but I'm doing some research for things to do on my trip to the Yucatan next week. I came across this and wondered if you all have seen the same, and if not, any other towns that you have heard of that may have been an inspiration for the overplayed song that is perfect for bathroom breaks at the shows.
http://www.holaasia.com/Puerto%20Morelos.htm
"It’s a peaceful tranquil place that rolls up the sidewalks at night – you can walk down the street without fear of being run over by taxis, crowds of tourist, scooters or hucksters, instead you will see the kids heading home after school or a fisherman returning home with his daily catch, or a mom stopping by the local store for a liter of milk. In Jimmy Buffet’s Parrot Head Handbook he cites Puerto Morelos as a source of inspiration for his famous song, Margaretville. It’s a safe town, many of Hola Asia’s customers enjoy a little after dinner adult conversation at the tables while they watch their kids play across the street in the playground."
(Maybe it was a different Jimmy Buffett that sang 'Margaretville')

Right, right...somewhere between southwest of disorder and the port of indecision.
Kinda like Cheeseburger was inspired by several different places like Demon Dogs in Chicago. It says 'a' source, not 'the' source.
I've got the Jimmy Buffett Scrapbook by Mark Humphry, but not the Parrothead handbook so I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that it's in the book or not.

Would that be a town full of only women named Margaret?

Also, wierd for a Mexican place to misspell a Spanish name...Margarita.
They could be doing a bit of factual fiction since Jimmy's said many places contain pieces of Margaritaville for him. And, it's also "anywhere you want it to be". (They want it to be their town.

Here's what I was able to come up with:
In an interview with Los Angeles Times pop critic Robert Hilburn Jimmy said, "I wrote Margaritaville in about five minutes at the end of a tour [in 1973] after having a margarita and it wasn't even a great margarita." Then, talking about the influx of tourists into Key West he continued, "Everybody was shocked, the roads were packed. I was sort of sitting there in this great old bar called the Old Anchor Inn watching all this, and that's what drove me to write the song."
Guess that blows Austin off the map.
Interesting side bar-The single CILCIA hit number 24 on the country charts in October, 1977 but only made it to #37 on the pop charts.
Signs of things to come....

Not necessarily. When Buffett guested on TNN's Texas Connection (hosted by Jerry Jeff Walker) several years ago he said the margarita that inspired "Margaritaville" was served to him in Austin.Midnight Flyer wrote:Here's what I was able to come up with:

I think what we have here is Jimmy in true Jimmy style. The quote about the Old Anchor Inn is accurate, I'm sure he probably did credit Austin on Texas Connection and over the years there seems to be more and more influences for the song; Puerto Morales, Rosarito Beach Hotel in Mexico, Key West, a bad marriage and bad weather. I'm sure there's more and over the years the stories seem to have become "factual fiction and fictional fact". What ever the influence truly was I think Jimmy defines Margaritaville best in this quote, "But then Margaritaville is a place you have to keep looking for."Jahfin wrote:Not necessarily. Just goes to show he's been having those "senior moments" for quite some time now. By the way, I like his quote off of You Had To Be There best.Midnight Flyer wrote:What ever the influence truly was I think Jimmy defines Margaritaville best in this quote, "But then Margaritaville is a place you have to keep looking for."

That probably is the best and based on how the inspiration for the song seems to be all over the map it is probably the most accurate "...it's anywhere you want it to be!"Jahfin wrote:Just goes to show he's been having those "senior moments" for quite some time now. As much as I tried to like that movie, aside from the gratuitous nudity, it was awful!

I also think Buffett's description of his sound is best summed up on that disc as well: "JimmyBuffettDrunkCaribbeanRocknRollMusic" (or something to that effect, I don't have the album handy).Midnight Flyer wrote:That probably is the best and based on how the inspiration for the song seems to be all over the map it is probably the most accurate "...it's anywhere you want it to be!"Jahfin wrote:Just goes to show he's been having those "senior moments" for quite some time now. Last year on the Ellen DeGeneres Show (I think?) he talked about writing the song in just a few minutes. He said he started it and was initially inspired while drinking a margarita at a bar with a friend in Austin, caught a flight home, and finished it in a bar in Key West.

I've heard the same story down in Key West, about Jimmy sitting in the Old Anchor bar when he first thought of Margaritaville.Midnight Flyer wrote:Here's what I was able to come up with:

I think that was on the 60 minutes special on CMT from last year.Quiet and Shy wrote:Last year on the Ellen DeGeneres Show (I think?) he talked about writing the song in just a few minutes. I've got the Jimmy Buffett Scrapbook by Mark Humphry, but not the Parrothead handbook so I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that it's in the book or not.
This is the quote from the Parrothead Handbook:
Margaritaville-This song was written about a drink in Austin, Texas, and the first huge surge of tourists who descended on Key West almost two decades ago. What can I say? People ask if I ever get tired of playing it. The answer is no. It has paid the rent for a long time and seems to put a few minutes of joy into this troubled world when sung by fans at a show. I feel very lucky.
There are so many great little tidbits about each song on the boxed set.

Thanks for checking the source!! I've got the box set, but over the years the handbook has disappeared.
