MERRILLVILLE — Want a cheeseburger? Want to eat it in paradise?
Come to Merrillville.
Northwest Indiana won’t soon be mistaken for a tropical playground, but a slice of the good life might be coming to town.
Cheeseburger in Paradise — the restaurant with ties to the chief Parrothead himself, Jimmy Buffett — will petition the Board of Zoning Appeals at its regular meeting Jan. 25 at Town Hall.
The restaurant, owned by Outback Steakhouse Inc., hopes to build in the area of 8223 Georgia St., south of U.S. 30 and just west of Interstate 65. It would sit near the existing Outback Steakhouse.
South Bend business owner Lance Long also will petition the BZA on Jan. 25 to build a Max & Erma’s restaurant in the same area, in the general area of 8239 Georgia St.
Max & Erma’s is a casual dining establishment with an extensive menu of entrees and sandwiches. The chain has restaurants in about a dozen states, but has targeted about 20 more.
Cheeseburger in Paradise already has four restaurants in Indiana, but this would be the first in northern Indiana. The chain has three locations in the Chicago suburbs and one in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Along with its famous cheeseburger, the restaurant serves an assortment of seafood dishes as well as other entrees. The restaurant also is known for its Tiki Bar and live music.
The restaurant’s Web site also touts its special events, including karaoke and Full Moon Parties.
The setting of the restaurant is Caribbean outside and inside, with the interior sporting weathered wood tables, bright colors and bamboo.
Timetables for the openings of both restaurants won’t be discussed until — and if — the BZA and then the Town Council grant special zoning approval.

If I don't end up employed there, I will probably be like Norm from Cheers.
It can become my oasis on trips from Indy to Chicago.....but wait.....then I'd never reach Chicago!!

Holy Crap this is within stumbling distance of my office
Maybe i can get my boss to bid on the job at cost in exchange for a permant seat at the bar.
Funny, it is across the highway from a small theatre jimmy played at a LONG time ago, maybe he will come back?

Used to bartend out at the Star Plaza...Jimmy played there in the early-mid 80's, before his popularity exploded into ampatheater tours. Would be an awesome venue to see him in - 3,500 seats; could pretty much name his price.
A CIP in Merrillville would be awesome...15 minutes from my garage door (and about 5 years off my liver).
