Anyone see the article in the Wall Street Journal the other day about hidden messages supposedly placed backwards in song lyrics? This all started in the late '60s with the Beatles and the "Paul is Dead" saga. If you play "Revolution No. 9" backwards, you supposedly hear John saying "Turn me on, dead man."
Supposedly, Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is full of hidden Satanic messages that one hears when the song is played backwards. There's a web site: http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm
that allows you to hear excerpts of some of these songs forwards and backwards.
You can hear some of these supposed "messages" if you look for them; however, it's mostly a lot of gobbledygook that merely sounds like words ... except for the Pink Floyd excerpt on the site, which apparently really is a backwards message that was hidden long ago....
and Jimmy theres still so much to be done... WWW Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent

My sentiments exactly. Back in my college radio days one of my classmates hosted a Christian Rock show and he showed me a record once by Petra that had backwards masking on it. When you spun the album backwards it said: "Why are you looking for the Devil when you should be looking for the Lord?"
And then there's the time worn joke about what happens when you spin a country music record backackwards: your wife comes home, your pickup truck starts and you get your dog back.

Did you mean to say a "cold drink" or a "cold drunk"???

And would that be a view of the cold drunk in your hand????
I had a preacher play "Stairway to Heaven" backwards for me one time and it is definately a song in itself backwards. Sometimes it may be coincidental but not with that song. Jimmy Paige was a devout follower of the teachings of Allister Crowley. one of the worlds most renown satanists/mysticists. He also bought Crowley's home which as been refered to as both a cottage and a mansion. The same preacher also said that Paige had Crowley's body preserved in the mansion, although I have never heard that anywhere else.
I think that sometimes this is done for attention and at least in the 80's, I think that it helped record sales. I can't really criticize bands that do this since I am a hugh Iron Maiden fan and they certainly mentioned Satan a time or two. I think it's mostly for show though. If it's real, then they should all burn in hell.
"And when I die you can bury me beneath these Western Skies”

This myth surrounding "Stairway To Heaven" is just that. People hear what they want to hear when they play records backwards. I have no doubt that some did it on purpose but, if it actually worked wouldn't the world be teeming with Satanic Zeppelin fans at this point? This is one of the biggest crocks of sh*t to ever be associated with this band and there's not even a hint of truth to it. Do a little research into Jimmy Page's interest in Aleister Crowley and the occult and you'll find the truth has very little do with the myth making surrounding him and Led Zeppelin.

If it's for real? Do you honestly believe that listening to a record backwards has any effect on the human psyche whatsoever? It's one of the biggest misconceptions associated with rock n' roll since it's inception. It's actually country music records you aren't supposed to listen to backwards...
Crowley wrote several books which eventually became a part of the basis L Ron Hubbard's Scientology movenemt.
Page's interest in the occult and buying what was one time Crowley's mansion is IMHO just that - an interest. I don't for one minute believe there was intentional backward masking going on - in fact this whole backward masking thing was just another tool for the Christian zealots to use in their quest to elminate the evil rock and roll of the 60's and early 70's.
Several musicians have been intersted in Crowley: the Beatles, David Bowie and the Eagles for example.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
Jimmy Page has never made any secret out of the fact that he has more than a passing interest in the occult (he even owned an occult book store in England at one time). What seemed so taboo in the 70s is very much a part of the mainstream these days. The extent to which he practices these beliefs is unknown (unless you want to believe everything that was written in the questionable Zep bio Hammer of the Gods) and is no one's business but Page's himself. Bottom line is, backwards masking simply doesn't work so there's not even a hint of truth to it. Now, take someone with a weak mind to start with (as in the case of the boy that murdered after hearing a message in a Judas Priest song), that's something else entirely. It's another case of someone hearing what they want to hear. Same with the Columbine thing and it being blamed on Marilyn Manson. That makes for much better press (and provides a scapegoat) when the real story is that the kids in question had a less than stable homelife. Go to a Zep board, start up about backwards masking and count the seconds before the hardcore fans ride your ass out of there on a rail....
Get high start Dark Side of the moon along with the Wizard of Oz the oddity of what happens on the Pink Floyd vs Oz scenes at the time is mind boggling
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.

David Gilmour has gone on record saying the true inspiration behind Dark Side of the Moon is actually The Sound of Music.

Yes Page owned the bookstore and yes he had an interest in the occult but there are so many FALSE stroies out there about Page and his interest in the occult. And Page isn't the only famous person that has an interest in the occult. I believe Yeats and Crowley were in the same "magic" organization.
Remember Dionne Warwick and her psychic friends network??

I agree about the false stories but as I mentioned previously, the truth doesn't make very good press. In Hammer of the Gods, Page's beliefs and practices were referred to as "Magik". Sadly many casual observers will never actually take the time to do the research on Zep and believe all the Satanic myths that have surrounded them since they formed in the late 60s. Same with Black Sabbath when the occult really played no actual part in their lives at all. That was an angle the media latched onto so they just went with it since it wasn't hurting their popularity any.

I haven't heard that in years! Never tried it, though...
