Outer Banks for couples

My husband and I want to go to the Outer Banks but a lot of the accommodations are for 3-4 bedroom homes.
He likes to fly fish and we would prefer somewhere quiet without a lot of kids. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Sanderling Resort & Spa
(I have never stayed there, but I'm guessing it might meet your needs.)
There's also the possibility of a quiet "fishing shack" in the Hatteras Island vicinity. Not much on amenities, but you can make your own fun.

Manteo is one of the coolest little towns down ther and they have several B&B's and small lodges (plus you may meet Andy Griffith, who everyone says is a p****)

We're not sure where to go, but somewhere quiet and not in the middle of everything. The fishing needs to be good though.

my favorite time has always been early september...weathers warm, everything is open, and all the kids and tourists have gone home. plus prices are about 60% off the usual price. we rent a 5 bedroom 5 bath house with a pool about 400 feet from teh ocean for 1400 a week in early sept. mid sept it goes down to about 900

The best time of year to go to the OBX for fishing is fall....October. The best area (IMO) of the OBX is Ocracoke Island. So many people think that the OBX is Nags Head and don't venture any further south. That's a shame because when you get down to Hatteras Island and then take the (free) ferry over to Ocracoke you've really reached the area that is the heartbeat of the OBX.
Here is a link:
http://www.ocracokeisland.com/ From this site you'll find information for every kind of accommodation from B&B to apartments.

What if I am not looking to fish?

in my opinion the mid banks are the built up, family, restaurant, bar areas...south and north are the smaller fishing areas, although duck and corolla are building up a little bit but not as much as nags head/kill devil hills/kitty hawk

I would definitely suggest Ocracoke. It's quiet. It's beautiful and there are several small nice cottages there.
my favorite place.

Do a check on Nags Head or Manteo or Duck or Ocracoker or realtors and ask for brochures. They generally cover the area very well and will work with you. See about rental properties. Mid summer is the Peak Season. Generally in the brochures they send, will tell you the various rates.
You should be able to Google or or use your favorite search engine to get positive results.
Fishing is like anywhere else, they bite or they don't. The Gulf Stream is nearby and you can find charter boats for half or full day, at almost any marina. WEATHER PERMITTING of course. Fishing from the beach can be productive. But if you want offshore then you can check with the local realtors for charter captains. Ocracoke and most of the area are nice quiet areas if you are not in the Peak Season. The Peak Season is when it is the worst time to be there if you don't like crowds.
Diving (SCUBA) can be quite interesting too. You can tour the area, Kitty Hawk and other places. There is or was a hang gliding school nearby. I dunno what to reccomend as I have no idea what you might like to do.
Anyway I hope this helps and good luck!! Enjoy your stay there and have a good time. There used to be a German restaurant and micro beer brewery in Manteo I think it was. There was a Christmas shop close by, in a sort of mini-mall type thing.I highly reccommend a stop in there if it is still there

I don't know much about fishing, but some of the more quiet places that we have stayed at are up in the Duck/Corolla area. Yes, Ocracoke is probably like that too but we have only day tripped it there. Ocracoke is very hard to get to though. Long drive from the Manteo bridge in the north, then a ferry ride, though you can get there via a long ferry ride from the mainland. In my opinion, not worth the trouble. However, comparing the Outer Banks to a place like Myrtle Beach in SC, I would say the entire Outer Banks is a "quiet place".
The best time to go, I think, is around Labor Day. Then the air is not too cold, but the water is still warm, and the prices are low. Around Memorial Day, the air is about the same but the water has not warmed up, yet prices are still low. If price is not an issue, then go in between these dates.
All the places we rented recently were done "online". Have had good success with Carolina Designs (
www.carolinadesigns.com) and Sun Realty (
www.sunrealtyobx.com).

We always stay in Frisco. Frisco/Avon/Buxton area are all nice and quiet. We're never there in the height of summer. I know it gets busier then, but they're so small I can't imagine it's ever too bad. There are alot of boats you can charter there including gulf stream trips right there.
There are alot of hotels but I think the rental homes are cheap enough and very nice. The hotels look kind of rough. We always use Midgett realty and since we go off season i'm often able to rent a place for the week in the $500. range.
I'm currently planning a trip right now and have a list of places i'm considering.

Charter boat fishing out of Oregon Inlet is great, but it ain't cheap:

Ocracoke is very quiet. You will have to take a ferry on and off the island. Duck and Corolla are very quiet as well. Nags Head is the closest to the Oregon Inlet fishing center and there is a Days Inn hotel there that is/was halfway decent 5 years ago...not sure what it is like now.

I would suggest Manteo and drive the 5 min it takes to get to Nags Head over the bridge. My wife and myself went last summer during August and stayed at the The Duke Of Dare Motor Lodge across from the historic downtown district. We called all up and down the beaches cheapest room we could find was 115. The Duke was only 55 and though it was very old, it was very clean and the staff was super. If you want a nice place to stay and not rent a house or spend a fortune on a hotel I would suggest this route.

Don't tell all the Yankees about our secret island (Ocracoke)!! Just kidding

Holidays are getting crowded. Anytime is a good time for Ocracoke...except mid-winter...basically the island closes down except for the locals and they don't like tourist very much. Been going there for over 30 years....it is great for fishing or nothing at all but tooling around on a bicycle and watching the tide roll in.
