I'm a full time hs sub getting my certificate for social studies. This is common for student teachers and new young teachers. If you were a guy all the girls would be dreamy eyed.
I know it's hard but you have to be kind of tough. Not jerk faced tough just kind of tough. The kids like to walk over the young teachers.
Locally we lost a really great art teacher who was young (male). He had too close of a relationship with his students and didn't put up good boundaries. Because of some situations that arose (nothing tech. wrong) he didn't get tenure. It looked bad when the school hired somebody else and let him go. He still hasn't gotten another job in a high school. So until you actually get a tenured position somewhere you have to be a bit tougher then you'd like.

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson,
Jesus loves you more than you will know.
God bless you, please Mrs. Robinson.
Heaven holds a place for those who pray,
Hey, hey, hey

We'd like to know a little bit about your for our files
We'd like to help you learn to help yourself.
Look around you all you see are sympathetic eyes,
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home.

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson,
Jesus loves you more than you will know.
God bless you, please, Mrs. Robinson.
Heaven holds a place for those who pray,
Hey, hey, hey

Hide in the hiding place where no one ever goes.
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes.
It's a little secret just the Robinsons' affair.
Most of all you've got to hide it from the kids.

Koo-koo-ka-choo, Mrs. Robinson,
Jesus loves you more than you will know.
God bless you, please, Mrs. Robinson.
Heaven holds a place for those who pray,
Hey, hey, hey

Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon.
Going to the candidate's debate.
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Every way you look at this you lose.

Where have you gone, Sweet Melissa,
Our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you.
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson.
Jotting Joe has left and gone away,
Hey hey hey.

My wife is in her 1st year back in teaching after taking 12 years off to raise our kids. She has a different perspective on it than most 1st year teachers since she has done it in the past, the biggest thing she says that some teachers forget is that teaching is your JOB, not a social hour or somewhere to make friends to hit the bars after work. Just be proffesional, dress proffesionally and you will be fine.

I'm glad you're enjoying the teaching; kids need good enthusiastic teachers in their schools. The key here is you're at that transition point where you go from being a student to being a professional. It sounds like you're doing the right things by keeping your personal life private, etc. but just realize that because your perspective changes doesn't mean the adolescent boys will change. Don't be afraid to seek out a couple of good mentors around this (male or female) who are younger teachers but have a few years experience. Good luck!!

I haven't even read the whole thread (too many words) but why does the song "Hot for Teacher" keep playing in my head?
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

Cubbie Bear wrote:Excuse me, Sweet Mel, Mrs Play....unless you are teaching at Broke Back High, of course the boys are noticing you. come on, look in a mirror. That part is natural. As far as the rest, you nailed it, don't give them on bit of info about you outside the classroom and you'll be fine.

When I was a high scool soph, the then current Miss Illinois was a student gym teacher. All of a sudden hundreds of boys hung around the gym for no apparent reason. go figure. Guess what, nobody ever new a thing about Miss W and that may have been the sexiest part :o

Besides, ask Shannon, boys are pigs, throw rocks at them if they get out of line

was that the 3rd or 4th Miss America contest when she was student-teaching? :D

Hey...

i've been doing the teaching thing for some time. and at one time a real mrs. robinson (thank goodness he's gone) teaching biology. i have just about experienced all - student going into labor in class, a death threat by one and even a boy planting a kiss on me in front of the class. most of the stuff you just laugh off- espeically the date and party propositions. like - i used to joke with the kids that when they turned 21 i would come to their parties.

but seriously, i work with preservice teachers now and i'll tell you the same thing i tell them - document, document, document. keep everything, tell others what is going on, etc. you never know when that little piece of paper or conversation will help out. parents are SO lawsuit happy these days and it falls into your lap to prove you did nothing wrong. also make sure someone higher up is with you when you have conversations with the kid from now on - like if he comes in for help before or after school, etc. just protects you.

good luck with it all...let me know if i can help out with anything - student teaching can be a really hard time. but it is so worth it in the end.
I must be wishing on someone else's star....

Mrs. Play wrote:I had problems with the high school boys flirting and saying things they shouldn't, my first two years of teaching, when I was teaching/coaching at a high school. Some of the male coaches didn't help the situation much either. It was really uncomfortable. Junior high was a little better, especially after I had a child. Now, I'm pregnant with our third child and teaching third grade. No problems now!

Hang in there, it will get better! The first few years can be a real challenge in many ways, but it is worth it.
Debbie- Congrats to you and Bill :) I didn't know about the new parrothead to be!

Melissa - no experience with teaching but it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders!
