Whaling harpoon nearly hits protesters

Post by Sam »

There are a couple of photos and at least one video link on the site.
I don't neccessaily agree with whaling, but just what the BLEEP are they complaining about?
They put themselves in the line of fire. What do they expect? Perhaps they should reconsider their tactics and safety if they complain about the risk of being hit with a harpoon, they should not be in the line of fire. I mean it is not like they don't know it could happen.

CANBERRA, Australia - Australia urged Japanese whalers and Greenpeace to calm down on Monday following life-threatening confrontations between them in the icy Southern Ocean. In the latest incident, a harpoon fired at a minke whale narrowly missed a protest boat.

“I don’t think people are going to have respect for tactics that are going to put human life at risk,” Australian Environment Minister Ian Campbell told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio. “They both need to understand that they have to respect human life.”

In Tokyo, the top government spokesman defended Japan’s research whaling activities. “Our country’s research whaling is being conducted based on international rules, to study matters such as the ecological system of whales,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe told reporters.

Abe added that he wasn’t aware of the specific circumstances related to Saturday’s incident.

The Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise has been shadowing the Japanese whaling fleet for several weeks in a bid to disrupt Japan’s annual whale hunt, prompting a heated exchange on Jan. 8 when the Greenpeace ship and a Japanese factory ship collided.

On Saturday, a Greenpeace activist was flung into the freezing sea when the line attached to the harpoon fell across his inflatable boat. He was later picked up uninjured after spending several minutes in the water.

‘New level’ of confrontation
Greenpeace and Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research blame each other for the incident, which occurred in Antarctic waters south of Australia. Another environmental group, Sea Shepherd, also is chasing the whalers.

Greenpeace expedition leader Shane Rattenbury said the whalers were taking more risks to fill their catch in Antarctic waters.

“There is definitely an increasing level of tensions down here and the harpooners are certainly starting to take shots that perhaps a week or two weeks ago they would not have taken,” Rattenbury told Sky television. “Yesterday took it to a new level — we are very concerned about that,” he said, adding the incident might force Greenpeace to review its tactics.

But Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research said it was Greenpeace that was taking more risks to remain in the media spotlight.

Institute chief Hiroshi Hatanaka said in a statement Greenpeace put its inflatable boat dangerously close to the bow of the whaling vessel when the harpooner fired. “Our harpooner had a clear shot and took it. The strike was perfect and the whale was killed instantly,” he said. “The fact that the rope fell onto their inflatable and one of the activists fell into the water is entirely their fault. We are also concerned that they tried to cut the line because it makes it more dangerous for them.”

Background on whaling
Japan abandoned commercial whaling in 1986, in line with an international moratorium, but began catching whales again the following year for what it calls scientific research. Critics say the whale meat ends up in up-market Japanese restaurants.

Despite international disapproval, Japan last June announced plans to double its annual catch of minke whales to 850, and to add fin whales and eventually humpbacks — two types of whales conservationists say whose survival is threatened.

Australia is a strong opponent of whaling by Norway and Japan, but Campbell ruled out intervening in the dispute between Japan and Greenpeace.

“Whaling will come to an end when the people of Norway and the people of Japan tell their governments unequivocally that the slaughter of whales — that the cold-blooded destruction of whales — needs to come to an end,” he said.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...when you try to take the life of others, and you almost lose yours....priceless. These are the same people that ram boats trying to make them stop whaling...no regard for human life, but save the whales...I would have shot a harpoon into thei mother boat, let it sink, save em and made em sit in the fish hold with the whale carcus

I'm with Longlinergirl on this one, if you put yourself in the face of danger on purpose then you have no right to be upset that something happens to you. Greenpeace ranks right up there with PETA on my list of idiots.

Pretty rediculous. What's more amazing to me is that Japan is doing this in the name of "research". What BS. And, I'll bet that water was cold!!! :o

Perhaps the Green Peacer's were doing their own "harpooning" back on the mother boat, and the losers had to go out and play "block that punt" er "Block that harpoon" rather. Just wonder what would have happened if the Green Peacer's happened to moon the whalers and took a direct hit with the harpoon right up the bung hole. Now who would get credit for that? Would it be considered extra points or an easy target and just standard point score?

They may have a lot of balls to put their little rubber raft infront of the whaling ship and in line of fire of the harpoon cannon.... however that does not make them intelligent and I would consider such action worthy of deserving a Darwin Award.

Too bad the gunner on the harpoon, missed the boat and hit the whale. Iany fool can snag a whale but how many can sink a Green Peace boat. If the French can do it a guy with a harpoon at that distance should easily be able to do it.

I am interested into what research the Japanese are actually conducting with the whales they kill. Why would it take 850 whales to conduct such research.....what are they looking for ? The tastiest part? The ultimate blubber gum?

I don't really have to wonder what Green Peace would have to say if one of the whalers pulled up next to them and dumped chum all over them....and THEN shot their boat with the harpoon and cut the line.

The Japanese need to quit lying to the world about their whaling...

the taking of whales for consumption (expempting Eskimos) needs to stop...

If not for Greenpeace keeping the focus on their deeds, they'd deplete the world of whales...that's quite obvious....

So only certain people should be able to take whales...Just because you don't agree with something...and I'm not really saying I disagree that they should stop whaling, but for us to say...you can't do that, is insane. WE can't go around and tell everyone what to do. The Iccat people are doing that to us and that is BS...And people would have a lot more respect for greenpeace, if they would quit putting human life before animal welfare...

I don't see any other way to put a stop to Japanese whaling...and they are lying about it's use...

so yeah....if that's what it takes...

I'm not talking about any other regulations regarding fishing...all of that is another whole ballgame...and I know nothing about..commercial fishing in waters off the US Coast...

If they lie about it's use..I'm positive they are lying about the take..just goes hand in hand...

whales are endangered enough just trying to survive in the ocean...

They say a bird could not live on what an Eskimo wastes..I suspect this whale meat isn't rationed out to the starving in Japan (are there any, btw, starving Japanese?...homeless? )
