Firstly, I'm a big fan. I saw him in concert last summer in NYC and really enjoy Fair & Square. That said, there's a certain peversity/weirdness to some of his tunes.
Examples:
Lake Marie- slashed throats and the color of blood
Pretty Good- song includes woman getting raped by a dog
6 O'Clock News- young man's suicide upon discovery of pedigree.
Accident (Things Could Be Worse)- includes woman raped by a minority.
John Garfield Blues- "dime store Jews".
What gives? Has John just led a full/depraved life, or does he have a dark side?

Not sure. I do like JP very much too though. He's smart & sarcastic and does indeed make you think.
John's been around a long time and would have been outed a long time ago if he was truly mean-spirited. His brother like relationship with Steve Goodman makes him bulletproof against an anti-semitic charge.
I'm just looking to hear what other serious JP/JB fans have to say about lyrics that make Why Don't We Get Drunk & Screw or West Nashville Ballroom Gown seem quite tame.
