Poor choice of words there. It's actually called free speech, which is exercised by the right, the left and everyone in between. No amount of CD burning or airplay bans are going to silence anyone.

johnson2113.....I like you. Don't care too much for Larry though. I work at Comcast and every customer I deal with calls me "Larry". It gets old.
Your posts are right on though.

The Dixie Chick had every right to say what she said. The people that reacted and burned the Dixie Chicks in effigy had every right to do that as well. For a while it was almost fashionable to slam the Dixie Chicks. And it seems from the previous post that to some degree it still is.
Both sides are allowed their opinions. Agree or disagree. Jimmy Buffett at times spoke out against the War and the Bush Administration. Are we any less fansof his? Have we started burning our copies of A1A in the streets?
Yes, both sides are entitled to their opinion. But I hated them before their comments. So, I wasn't bashing them because it was fashionable, it just gave me more of a reason. As far as Jimmy goes, I love his music. Nothing is going to change that. And he's not obnoxious about it, like the rest of them.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, you don't see the people on the right bashing the left. We go to their movies, buy their albums, and watch their TV shows, but the one time we stand up for what we believe in we're the assholes.
A guy like Larry the Cable Guy, he's a racist, homophobe, piece of white trash. But when a leftist commedian rips into white people, Republicans, he's absolutely hyseterical, a genuis. I saw all kinds of people at the Larry concert and everyone was laughing their assess off.
Us vs. Them, that's the way it's been, that's the way it was, and that's the way it will always be. I see a lot more people on the right trying to work with the left, our President included. But for the left their agenda is more important, Kanye, Dixie Chicks, whoever.
Sorry, for the rant, but I'm tired of everybody saying it works both ways. When actually it's nothing close to that. Yes, I hate the Dixie Chicks, I hate their music, and I hate their stupid comments. And goddamnit I'm proud of it.
I've never heard anyone call Larry the cable guy a racist or a homophobe, white trash yes because thats HIS schtick that he came up with.

In the US, people are guarenteed free speech. That is, the government will not persecute you for what you say. That does not, however, make you exempt from the consequences of your words from everybody else. Imagine if you had a business, any business, and 90+% of your clients were conservative Republicans. If you stood up publicly and insulted their values, they're going to take their business elsewhere. That's essentially what happened. Now, maybe if they were bigger, like say Springsteen, Buffett, or the Dead, your fans would just shrug off the comments and still buy your records. Still, I think it's a stupid business move to alienate any chunk of your audience. And the funny part is that a lot of political analysts feel that these comments by the Dixie Chicks, Michael Moore, etc probably did more to mobilize Republicans than Democrats. I can still see some band member on a future "Where are they now episode" saying "We could have been huge! If only she would have kept her mouth shut......"

They
are huge and I hope they never make any concessions to either side when it comes to voicing their opinions.

Whether they were huge or not can be debated. But Natalie Maines certainly has gotten bigger.

Lame fat jokes aside, I'm referring to CD and concert ticket sales figures.

OK. In all seriousness. If you like the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines has a really cool duet with Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis on "KGSR Broadcasts Vol 13" called "Travelin' Soldier". The rest of the 2 CD set is really good too.
